Leon is Resident Evil Requiem’s combat-focused protagonist. Use crouching against suitable overhead attacks, make use of what persists between his and Grace’s sections, and keep his weapons upgraded as fights intensify. These tips draw on director Koshi Nakanishi’s guidance and preview coverage; they are not a difficulty-by-difficulty walkthrough.
How to approach Leon’s sections
Leon’s gameplay emphasizes intense combat and managing groups of enemies, while Grace’s sections lean more toward evasion, puzzles, and resource management. PlayStation Blog’s hands-on preview describes Leon’s action as balancing the horror of Resident Evil 2 with the action of Resident Evil 4. Think about space and multiple threats, not just one enemy at a time. PlayStation Blog’s preview is based on a limited hands-on session, rather than a complete walkthrough.

1. Expect crowds, not just duels
Leon’s combat is built around improvised crowd management. Watch how enemies approach and make room to respond rather than assuming every encounter is a straightforward one-on-one fight. That is a practical reading of the combat focus described in the preview, not a tested route or guaranteed tactic for every room.
2. Read each enemy’s behavior
Director Koshi Nakanishi says some zombies retain traces of their former human behavior, and some may pick up dropped weapons. Pay attention to what an enemy does instead of assuming every one follows the same pattern. The behavior is a developer-described feature, not a promise that every enemy can or will use a weapon.

Defend yourself in close combat
3. Crouch beneath a suitable overhead sweep
Nakanishi’s specific advice is: “Try crouching when an enemy sweeps at you from above.” Crouching is a situational evasion option for an attack that passes overhead, not a universal dodge or a replacement for reacting to other attack types. The director says the option works for both Leon and Grace. Read the director’s interview.
4. Use Leon’s hatchet against the chainsaw attack
PlayStation Blog’s preview describes Leon using his hatchet to parry a chainsaw attack. Treat that as a demonstrated close-combat option, not a guarantee that every chainsaw encounter can be handled the same way; the preview does not establish exact timing.

5. Be alert to a dropped chainsaw
PC Gamer’s three-hour preview reports an encounter in which Leon can wrest a dropped chainsaw from an enemy. That is a preview observation, not a general rule for all enemies or encounters. PC Gamer’s preview provides the reported context.
Use the handoff between Leon and Grace
When the story returns to the same location with the other protagonist, the shared state can matter. Nakanishi says enemies Grace defeats stay dead when Leon arrives, and items left on the ground persist too. His example also makes clear that Grace may not have enough ammunition to defeat every enemy, leaving Leon to deal with threats she escaped. The director confirms these shared-location rules.

6. Remember which enemies Grace already defeated
If Grace kills an enemy in a location, it remains dead for Leon when the story switches back there. You do not need to treat that same defeated enemy as a fresh threat during Leon’s return.
7. Check the ground for items left behind
Items left on the ground persist between the protagonists’ sections in the same location. Keep that in mind when deciding whether to pick something up immediately or leave it for the next visit; the stated rule concerns items left on the ground, not every item or inventory resource.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

8. Weigh fleeing against spending Grace’s ammunition
If Grace is short on ammunition, the director’s example supports considering whether to flee an enemy and leave it for Leon rather than trying to clear every threat. That is a choice to weigh against the situation, not a blanket rule: the sources do not establish which enemies are safe to leave or how every encounter will play out.

9. Use Leon’s weapon upgrades as the game progresses
Antique coin upgrades in the sanatorium are exclusive to Grace; Nakanishi says Leon cannot pick them up. Leon has traditional weapon enhancements and modifications instead, and the director says upgrading becomes crucial later in the game. The interview does not name a best weapon, upgrade order, or optimal build, so choose upgrades without assuming a published priority list exists.

Choose the perspective that suits you
10. Try first- and third-person views
Nakanishi says both perspectives are available from the start. The interview does not establish that either one gives Leon an objective combat advantage. Choose the view that feels more comfortable and makes it easier for you to follow what is happening on screen.
What these tips do—and do not—establish
The tips cover developer-described mechanics and preview observations, not post-release, difficulty-specific instructions. The hatchet parry and chainsaw pickup come from preview sessions; the crouch, shared-location rules, upgrades, and perspective options are described in the director interview. Capcom’s news index lists a free new game mode update dated May 8, 2026, but that listing alone does not establish patch-specific balance changes or Leon tactics. For current mode and balance details, consult Capcom’s official news index and any relevant official patch notes.
