There is no definitive top 10, but these games show how the 2010s reshaped video games: from vulnerable horror and expansive exploration to free-to-play battle royale, seasonal content and stories that drew broad critical and audience recognition. This is an argued selection across design, business models, cultural reach and player experience—not a ranking or a claim that only games released during the decade mattered.
What makes a game “define” a decade?
Influence is difficult to reduce to a single measure. Editorial lists from The Washington Post, TIME, WIRED and PC Gamer approach the decade through different combinations of design, technology, business, audience, genre and culture. Their selections are judgments, not a shared statistical ranking.
Recognition can add useful evidence without settling the question. The National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers (NAVGTR) announced its decade awards in 2020, while PlayStation Blog’s poll reflects the preferences of its participating readers. Those are distinct measures, not votes from a universal gaming audience.
10 games that capture the decade’s shifts
The games below are grouped by the kind of influence they help illustrate, rather than ranked from best to worst. The list includes one game released before 2010 because its cultural importance rose during the decade.

1. Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010)
Amnesia made vulnerability its central design idea. The Washington Post argues that removing combat left players without the usual means of fighting back, refreshing survival horror and influencing later first-person horror such as Alien: Isolation and Outlast. Its importance is not that every later horror game copied it, but that it helped show how fear could come from what a player cannot do.
2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)
The Witcher 3 represents the decade’s appetite for large-scale role-playing and narrative worlds. NAVGTR named it its Games of the Decade winner in 2020. It also appeared among the top games in PlayStation Blog’s decade poll, a separate sign of recognition among that blog’s readers.

3. The Last of Us (2013)
The Last of Us made character-focused storytelling a major part of the decade’s conversation about games. It won five NAVGTR decade categories, including writing in a drama and lead performance in a drama. It also won PlayStation Blog’s Game of the Decade poll, receiving over 11% of votes in that reader poll.
4. Cuphead (2017)
Cuphead stands out for an unmistakable hand-drawn visual style and demanding action. It led NAVGTR’s game-level decade results with six category victories, including artistic animation and character design. Awards do not measure the whole of a game’s reach, but these wins recognize how thoroughly its visual identity shaped the experience.

5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)
Breath of the Wild made open-ended exploration its defining promise. TIME praised its open exploration, while the Washington Post cautioned in 2019 that its influence had not yet fully resonated. That contrast matters: a game can feel immediately significant, but its longer design legacy takes time to observe. A confident judgment about influence is harder while that influence is still unfolding.
6. Fortnite (2017 battle royale)
Fortnite’s battle royale mode became a cultural phenomenon, according to TIME. The Washington Post also identified battle royale and seasonal battle passes as defining decade themes. Together, those observations point to a shift in how games could combine a competitive format with an ongoing, regularly refreshed experience. The game’s significance here is both its play style and the business model that came to be associated with the decade.

7. Minecraft (released 2009; cultural rise during the 2010s)
Minecraft predates the decade, so it is not included as a 2010s release. TIME’s case for its place is its growth into a cultural institution during the 2010s. Including it makes the list about games that defined the decade’s experience, not just games whose launch dates fell within it.
8–10. A deliberately open edge to the canon
A list of ten can suggest false precision, so the examples above should not be mistaken for a definitive consensus. Different editorial criteria and audiences produce different canons. The Washington Post’s 2019 assessment also explicitly withheld a confident influence judgment for Red Dead Redemption 2 and Breath of the Wild at that point, illustrating why a decade-end list cannot always know which recent games will prove most influential over time.

For context, NAVGTR’s 2020 results covered 60 award categories: 32 of the 60 category winners (53.3%) were new intellectual properties, while 15 of 60 wins (25%) went to older games from the first half of the decade. These are category-win counts, not a measure of sales or total cultural influence. They show why a decade’s story need not belong only to sequels, familiar franchises or its newest releases.

How to read competing “games of the decade” lists
- Check the selection lens. A list focused on genre change may favor a different game from one emphasizing cultural reach, representation or awards.
- Separate acclaim from influence. Awards and polls document recognition by particular organizations or audiences; they do not prove that a game changed the medium.
- Notice what counts as the decade. A release-date list excludes Minecraft; a list about peak cultural impact can reasonably include it.
- Allow time for a legacy to emerge. Recent games may be influential, but long-term effects on design are easier to assess in retrospect.
