Rec Room is no longer playable. The social VR game shut down at noon Pacific time on June 1, 2026, and its online services went offline. Rec Room said it could not make the business sustainably profitable. Its announced deadlines for account data exports, token use, refunds, and creator payments have also passed.
When did Rec Room shut down?
Rec Room announced its closure on March 30, 2026, and ended service at noon Pacific time on June 1, 2026. The company’s terms notice, updated April 22, 2026, says access licenses ended at that time and the platform is no longer available through any platform.
The shutdown covered the game, the recroom.network website, and online Rec Room Studio services. Players can no longer log in to play, and a VR headset or other gaming accessory cannot restore access.
Why did Rec Room close?
Rec Room said the business could not become sustainably profitable. In its March 30, 2026 closure announcement, it wrote: “Our costs always ended up overwhelming the revenue we brought in.” It also cited a recent shift in the VR market and broader headwinds in gaming as reasons the path to profitability had become too difficult.

Those are the company’s stated reasons. The announcement did not provide a breakdown of revenue, costs, or player retention that would independently quantify why the business became unsustainable.
What happened to Rec Room accounts, photos, and creations?
Rec Room offered players downloads of their in-game photos and an avatar “final report card” memento. Creators were offered room and invention data exports through the Steam PC build, in formats intended to help them recreate their work elsewhere. The export window ended on June 1, 2026.

Those exports were not playable backups. Rec Room said rooms depended on its servers and stated: “Unfortunately, you cannot download a working copy of your rooms.” Its build servers went offline at closure. The company said Studio would continue in a limited offline mode so cached rooms could be opened on a local computer, but its notice does not establish whether that software remains available or compatible now.
What happened to tokens, RR+, refunds, and creator payouts?
Rec Room’s shutdown notice set separate deadlines for purchases, balances, memberships, and creator earnings. Each date below is part of the company’s dated wind-down plan, not a current offer.
