Find Chameleon first in the dry garden, then follow his clues through eight more stops. This guide counts the opening meeting as location 1, matching GameSpot’s nine-location count; some walkthroughs instead number only the eight later encounters. Visit the spots in order to complete the chain and earn the Top Hat.

How the Chameleon quest works

Talk to Chameleon in the dry garden to start the quest and receive the first clue. Each encounter points you toward the next hiding place, so follow the sequence below. The list counts the opening meeting as the first of nine locations, rather than treating it as a separate stop.

All nine Chameleon locations in order

  1. Dry garden: start the quest

Look slightly north of the fruit market for a backyard between awnings. Reach it through a crawlspace and speak to Chameleon in the sand garden to begin.

  2. Construction yard: blue portable toilet

Head to the northern construction yard and check the blue portable toilet. GameSpot’s route describes getting a bone through a crawlspace and using it to distract the dog at its bowl. Prima Games’ route says you may need to progress through Tanuki’s Petwork to reach this area; these are route directions, not confirmed universal requirements.

  3. Central park: robot slide

Find the robot slide in the central park. Chameleon’s clue about a “metal friend” points to this structure.

  4. Six vending machines by the red car

Across from the robot slide, look beside a red car for a group of six vending machines. Climb onto them to find Chameleon.

  5. Gecku store

Go to the southern part of the map and enter the shop selling Gecku merchandise. Climb the shelves to reach the hiding place.

  6. Rooftop garden

Start near the shrine by the fishing pier. Climb the vending machines and crates to cross above the street, then follow the vines to the rooftop garden. Chameleon is beyond the gate near a resident watering plants. GameSpot’s route notes that turning off the hose can distract the gardener.

Prima Games says its rooftop route requires at least two fish. GameSpot’s description does not state that requirement, so treat it as guidance for Prima’s route rather than a confirmed requirement for every approach.

  7. Southwest warehouse: red bullseye alley

In the southwest, climb the warehouse exterior using boxes and pipes. Look for the alley marked by a red bullseye.

SmartGames Cats & Boxes – The Feline Fun Travel Puzzle Game, Ages 7+
    • BUILDS PLANNING & SEQUENTIAL THINKING — Cats & Boxes develops five STEM-connected cognitive skills with every puzzle: planning, logic, spatial insight, problem solving and concentration. Because you move the box pieces one at a time — and each must fit back on the board before the next move — you have to think several moves ahead and picture the whole sequence, the multi-step reasoning that underpins mathematics, coding and logical thinking. It's so much fun to play, you'll forget you're building real skills.
    • DESIGNED FOR AGES 7 TO ADULT — 60 CHALLENGES TO WIZARD LEVEL — Starter challenges solve in just a few moves; Wizard challenges make you cover a cat with a box only to move it again later, and genuinely test adults. Early challenges welcome a 7-year-old; the hardest push seasoned puzzlers. One game the whole family puzzles through together, each at their own level.
    • MOVE THE BOXES, HIDE THE CATS — These cats are dying to get into a box! Choose a challenge and place the cats and box pieces on the board as shown. Then move the box pieces around — one at a time, each fitting back onto the board before you move the next — until every cat is tucked snugly inside a cardboard box. Plan the order carefully, because you'll often need to cover one cat, then shift that box later. One solution every time.
    • THE PERFECT TRAVEL BRAIN GAME FOR EVERY GENERATION — Everything packs into the compact case with a lid — just close it and go. It's ideal for planes, road trips, restaurants and grandparents' houses, with no loose pieces to lose. The same puzzle that builds a child's planning gives adults a satisfying screen-free challenge and offers older adults an engaging mental workout that helps keep the mind sharp and active — a purr-fect, thoughtful gift across generations.

  8. Northwest pier: behind the signboard

Find the fisherman at the northwest pier and check behind a nearby signboard.

  9. Southeast convenience store: bathroom

At the southeast convenience store, look for the nearby dog and small construction site. The described route uses a bone to distract the dog, then crates to climb into the restroom. Prima Games also describes entering through a vent from inside the store if the dog is still blocking the way. Chameleon and an Onigiri Hat are inside.

What you get for finishing

GameSpot says completing all the hiding spots earns the Top Hat, one of the game’s 42 cosmetic items. The Onigiri Hat in the final restroom is a separate find, not the completion reward.

Navigation tips

  • Unlock fast-travel points to cut down on trips across the city, as GameSpot recommends.
  • If a dog blocks a route, the construction-yard and restroom walkthroughs describe using a bone as a distraction.
  • For the rooftop garden, plan to climb vines and get past the resident watering plants; turning off the hose is one distraction described by GameSpot.
