New to Octopath Traveler 0? Build your first hours around three ideas: learn enemy weaknesses, save Boost Points for turns that matter, and explore what each town and recruit can offer. The game gives you room to shape both your battle party and Wishvale, so treat early choices as experiments rather than hunting for one supposedly perfect build.
How to make battles easier
1. Learn weaknesses before spending Boost Points
Enemies have Shield Points. Hitting a weakness reduces them, and reaching zero breaks the enemy. Use available attacks to discover vulnerabilities and make progress toward a break before committing valuable Boost Points. Square Enix explains the weakness and Shield Point system in its official overview.

2. Plan what you will do when an enemy breaks
A broken enemy is temporarily unable to act and has reduced defense. That creates a window to deal damage more safely, or to recover and prepare if your party needs it. Work toward a break with a purpose: decide whether the opening is for offense or for getting your team back into shape.
3. Spend Boost Points for a high-value turn
Boost Points accumulate each turn and can strengthen more than attacks: they can also improve recovery skills and support effects. Save them when you are building toward a break or a powerful turn, but remember that a boosted heal or support action can be more useful than extra damage when the party needs help. The official overview describes Boost as affecting attacks, recovery, and support.

How to build a party that fits your approach
4. Try recruits against a specific gap
The PlayStation game description says there are over 30 allies to recruit and battle parties can include up to eight characters. Rather than assuming a fixed “best team,” try new allies and see whether they add a weapon, skill, or role your current formation lacks. Those figures and the platform listing appear on the PlayStation US game page.
5. Choose the protagonist’s job to complement your companions
The protagonist can pursue one of eight jobs: Warrior, Merchant, Thief, Apothecary, Hunter, Cleric, Scholar, or Dancer. Job choice changes the weapons and skills available, so weigh what you enjoy using against what the rest of your party already provides. Square Enix frames job selection around play style and balancing companion jobs, not a universal strongest pick. See its character and system introduction.

6. Treat skills as another part of party composition
Action Skills can be changed like equipment. The Training Ground also lets companions learn skills and equip learned skills to other companions. Use that flexibility to adjust a character to the job you need them to fill, rather than assuming a recruit has to stay limited to one preset role.
What to do in towns and Wishvale
7. Check what each NPC interaction offers
Path Actions vary by the person you approach. Depending on the NPC, interactions can include inviting someone to town, battling a towns person, or obtaining items. Make a habit of checking available interactions instead of walking past every resident; the options are part of how exploration can pay off. The official overview and PlayStation page describe these varied interactions.

8. Revisit Wishvale as facilities become available
Wishvale is more than a place to return between battles. Square Enix describes facilities for the Hub and cooking, fields, ranching, shops, and the Training Ground. Different facilities serve different town functions, so revisit the town as its systems open up rather than treating it as a one-time setup screen.
9. Assign residents where their skills are useful
Residents have skills that can benefit the town, and Square Enix advises assigning them to suitable locations. Think about what each person contributes and match that skill to a facility’s purpose. The official material does not establish a single best layout or build order, so use the assignments available to you and adapt as your town develops.

How to approach the start of the game
10. Try the prologue demo if you play on PlayStation
The PlayStation US listing offers a free prologue demo for PS4 and PS5. It is a practical way to see whether the opening suits you before starting the full game. That listing does not establish save-transfer rules across all storefronts, so do not assume demo progress carries over on every platform.
11. Experiment instead of chasing a universal build
The official sources present multiple jobs, recruitable allies, transferable skills, and town systems, but do not identify a universally strongest starting job, party, or Wishvale layout. Try choices that fit your preferred approach, then adjust when a battle or town task exposes a gap. The overview also notes that the upper limit on buildable buildings differs according to console processing capabilities, while the story and obtainable items are the same; avoid assuming every platform has identical building limits.
