Some video game secrets are deliberate rewards; others are glitches or hidden code that players only recognized years later. These 11 examples span all of those categories, so the discovery story matters as much as the secret itself. Dates below are reported by the cited accounts, not a uniform measure of when a feature first became technically discoverable.

What counts as a video game secret?

“Secret” can mean an intentionally hidden room, an unlockable quest, an obscure but intended mechanic, an accidental bug, or content uncovered by examining a game’s code. Those are not interchangeable: an inaccessible glitch is not necessarily a developer-planted Easter egg, and code found in a game may never have been available through ordinary play.

The examples below give the release year and reported discovery year where the cited accounts provide them. Those retrospective timelines are not all equally well documented, so they should be read as reported milestones rather than proof that no player had found the feature earlier.

11 secrets and the stories behind them

1. Adventure’s hidden signature room (1980; discovery date not established here)

In Atari’s Adventure, designer Warren Robinett hid a room containing his name. He said he did it because Atari designers were not receiving credit for their work. In a 2017 Forbes interview, Robinett recalled that 15-year-old Adam Clayton found the room and wrote to Atari. Robinett called it the first secret in a computer program to be called an “Easter Egg,” while explicitly not claiming to be the first person ever to hide a secret in software. This is an intentionally hidden message and a pointed act of authorship, not merely an obscure gameplay trick. Robinett’s account in Forbes.

2. Donkey Kong’s Atari 800 initials (1983; reportedly found in 2009)

Retrospective accounts describe initials hidden in the Atari 800 version of Donkey Kong. GameRevolution attributes a 2009 discovery to engineer Don Hodges, while Gaming.net says the creator revealed the initials 26 years after the port’s release. The accounts differ on the sequence used to reveal them, so a precise button-by-button recipe is not well established by these sources. This is an intentionally concealed signature, but the discovery timeline and exact trigger are less firmly aligned than Robinett’s story. GameRevolution’s account; Gaming.net’s account.

3. GoldenEye 007’s concealed ZX Spectrum emulator (1997; found years later, exact year not stated)

GameRevolution reports that code in GoldenEye 007 contained a ZX Spectrum emulator and a set of games. The feature was patched over rather than fully removed, and its existence came to light years after the Nintendo 64 game’s release. This is a code-discovery story, not an Easter egg that players could simply reach by following an in-game clue. The cited account does not establish a precise discovery year or a normal-player access method. GameRevolution’s account.

4. Final Fantasy IX’s Nero family sidequest (2000; reportedly found in 2013)

GameRevolution describes a hidden sidequest involving the Nero brothers, reportedly discovered 13 years after Final Fantasy IX was released. Its account says players must find all three brothers on the game’s fourth disc, with a Protect Ring as the reward. The source presents this as unusually easy to miss side content rather than a code-only curiosity. GameRevolution’s account.

5. Doom II’s Industrial Zone secret (1994; found more than two decades later)

Gaming.net says players long believed a secret area in Doom II’s level 15 could only be reached with cheats. It reports that player Zero Master found a way to trigger it by being knocked into a teleporter by an enemy. That makes this an obscure gameplay interaction, not necessarily a deliberately signposted Easter egg. The account is retrospective and does not give a precise discovery year or enough independently confirmed detail to treat the maneuver as a verified step-by-step guide. Gaming.net’s account.

6. Halo 3’s “Happy Birthday, Lauren” message (2007; reported discovery in 2014)

WatchMojo reports that on December 25, a player can start a campaign mission and press both thumbsticks during the loading screen to reveal the message “Happy Birthday, Lauren.” It credits programmer Adrian Perez and says the secret surfaced in 2014, seven years after Halo 3 launched. The combination of a calendar date and a controller input makes this a clear example of a deliberately hidden, date-dependent message. Gaming.net also recounts the Easter egg, though the available accounts are retrospective rather than a direct statement from Bungie or Perez. WatchMojo’s account; Gaming.net’s account.

7. Batman: Arkham City’s Calendar Man date clue (2011; reportedly found three years later)

WatchMojo says setting the system date to December 13, 2004—the date it identifies as Rocksteady’s founding—causes Calendar Man to deliver a clue referencing Arkham Knight. It reports that the discovery came three years after Batman: Arkham City’s release and suggests an anonymous YouTube upload may have helped bring it to light. The date-dependent dialogue is an intentional clue; the uploader’s identity and exact role in the discovery are not established. WatchMojo’s account.

8. Super Smash Bros. Melee’s playable Master Hand (2001; discovery year disputed)

A character-selection glitch in Super Smash Bros. Melee lets players control Master Hand, normally a boss. WatchMojo gives 2008 as the discovery year, seven years after release; GameRevolution says it was uncovered ten years after launch. Those accounts conflict, so a precise discovery date cannot be stated confidently from them. Both describe a glitch, not an intended unlock. GameRevolution also warns of possible file corruption or other glitches, but that risk is not independently corroborated by the other cited account and is not a reason to treat the trick as a safe, ordinary feature. WatchMojo’s account; GameRevolution’s account.

9. NieR: Automata’s route to the final credits (2017; found nearly four years later)

WatchMojo reports that modder Lance McDonald uncovered an unrecognized piece of code while reverse-engineering NieR: Automata. He identified a cheat code that takes the player from the prologue to the final ending’s credits sequence, nearly four years after the game’s release. This was not a conventional hidden quest waiting at the end of exploration: code analysis exposed a shortcut through a large portion of the game. The cited roundup does not provide the input sequence, so it is not reproduced here. WatchMojo’s account.

10. The Last of Us’s changing television image (2013; reportedly found in 2021)

WatchMojo says streamer and speedrunner Anthony Calabrese noticed in 2021—seven years after the game’s release—that quitting and reloading at a particular point in The Last of Us prologue changes a television image to show an ant infected with cordyceps. The account attributes an explanation to designer Kurt Margenau, who described it as a shader-test bug. That distinction matters: the image may look like a purposeful nod to the game’s infection, but the reported explanation points to an unintended rendering artifact rather than a planned Easter egg. WatchMojo’s account.

11. Red Dead Redemption 2’s spider-symbol mystery (2018; reported clues began in late 2025)

WatchMojo reported in April 2026 that players had noticed carved spider symbols on telegraph poles, with appearances said to vary by time of day and further clues involving directions and objects. The symbols were noticed in late 2025, and the roundup described the larger mystery as unsolved at that time. That is a dated status report, not confirmation of whether the puzzle has since been solved. The account does not establish a final explanation or a definitive intended reward. WatchMojo’s April 2026 account.

Why some secrets stay hidden

Games do not always treat complete discovery as the goal. In a 2018 interview, Hollow Knight co-creator Ari Gibson said the team did not expect every player to see everything, and that finding something other players had not found could make it more special. That design philosophy helps explain why missable content can remain meaningful without a quest marker or an in-game checklist. Kotaku’s interview with the Hollow Knight team.

Tunic developer Andrew Shouldice and collaborators have likewise discussed exploration and indirect guidance as part of designing a world that players may not fully uncover. The Game Developer interview page includes a correction to an earlier statement about the game’s glyph language; the corrected page is the relevant version to consult rather than repeating the superseded claim. Not every long-missed discovery is the same kind of secret

The range matters: Robinett’s signature and Halo 3’s birthday message were intentionally hidden; the Final Fantasy IX quest rewards exploration; the Master Hand trick is described as a glitch; The Last of Us television image is reported as a shader-test bug; and GoldenEye 007’s emulator and NieR: Automata shortcut emerged through code analysis. The discovery year alone cannot tell you which category a secret belongs to, how hard it was to find, or whether developers expected anyone to find it.
