This is a 2024-framed recommendation list; platform details below are drawn from official sources accessed October 7, 2026, and can change. “Best” here means a useful mix of platform coverage, ease of joining friends, genres and access costs—not a review-score ranking or a claim of hands-on testing.
What cross-platform play means
Cross-play means players on different systems can play together. A game being available on several platforms does not, by itself, establish that its players can join the same matches. Cross-progression is separate: playing together does not guarantee that saves, purchases or unlocks transfer between systems. Rocket League, Warframe and Dead by Daylight provide separate guidance for progression or account linking.

Eight cross-platform games to consider
1. Fortnite — flexible battle royale and multiplayer
Fortnite is a broad pick for groups who want a battle royale alongside other multiplayer experiences. Epic names it among its first-party cross-play games. Console players can adjust cross-platform play in the game’s settings, but Epic warns that disabling it may limit access to some modes. 2. Fall Guys — quick party-platform rounds
Fall Guys suits groups looking for lighthearted, short rounds rather than a long competitive session. Epic identifies it as a first-party cross-platform, cross-play game. Its official listing is included in Epic’s cross-play overview.

3. Rocket League — competitive car soccer
Rocket League offers an easy-to-understand premise with room to develop skill. Epic says players on Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Steam can randomly matchmake with or against one another in all online match types. That wording establishes matchmaking coverage; check the game’s current party and account requirements before organizing a group. Epic Games’ Rocket League support page provides the platform details.
4. Minecraft Bedrock — building and exploration
The Bedrock experience supports cross-play among Windows, Xbox, Switch, PS5 and mobile, according to Minecraft’s official overview. Edition compatibility matters: do not assume every version of Minecraft connects to every other version. Minecraft also says that online multiplayer on its featured servers requires a subscription sold separately. Check the specific platform, edition and multiplayer access terms your group will use. 5. Apex Legends — squad-based battle royale
Apex Legends supports PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series consoles, Switch, and PC through the EA app and Steam. EA says players can form parties across those platforms. Its matchmaking keeps console play separate from PC unless a console player joins a party with a PC friend, so the matchmaking pool can depend on who is grouped together. 6. Overwatch 2 — team-based hero shooter
Overwatch 2 is an option for groups who prefer coordinated teams and distinct hero roles. Blizzard’s cross-play notice lists PC, Xbox One and Series, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Switch. The notice is historical and described a competitive-mode exception at the time it was published; it does not establish today’s competitive rules. 7. Warframe — cooperative action missions
Warframe fits groups who want cooperative missions and long-term character progression. Digital Extremes says players can join missions across PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch through squads or public matchmaking. Cross-platform save and account linking are separate from cross-play, and the progression guidance notes purchase-specific caveats. 8. Dead by Daylight — asymmetrical horror
Dead by Daylight gives groups an asymmetrical team-survival format: one player hunts while the others try to escape. Behaviour lists Steam, Microsoft Store, Epic, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, and Switch for cross-play. A later Switch update notice warns that version mismatches can temporarily block cross-play, so friends may need to wait until their game versions match. How to choose for your group
Start with the group’s actual systems and the game editions each person owns. Then compare the kinds of sessions your friends want: short party rounds, a competitive match, cooperative missions or a longer progression-focused game. Before settling on a pick, check the details that can prevent a cross-platform session from working:
- Edition and platform: confirm every player has a supported version. Minecraft’s Bedrock coverage, for example, is not a promise that every Minecraft edition connects.
- Mode restrictions: cross-play may differ by mode, settings or party composition. Fortnite warns that turning it off can restrict modes, while Apex describes a different matchmaking pool when a console player parties with a PC player.
- Online access: check the relevant platform’s requirements. Minecraft specifically says online multiplayer on its featured servers requires a separately sold subscription.
- Version and account requirements: keep games updated and check account-linking rules. Dead by Daylight’s Switch notice shows that a version mismatch can interrupt cross-play; progression linking is a separate matter in games such as Warframe.
- Access cost: free-to-play status, purchase requirements and online subscriptions can vary by game and platform. Verify the terms for the exact systems your group uses.
Availability, account systems, mode rules and platform policies can change. The official pages linked above are the best starting point for checking the current requirements for your friends’ specific platforms and modes.
