Earlier games already built stealth into their design, and Unity has a credible claim of its own. Mirage’s distinction is how deliberately its tools, social stealth, and assassination missions work together to put infiltration back at the center.
What makes Mirage feel like a stealth game?
A game can include a crouch button or let players sneak past an enemy without making stealth its defining play style. A more useful test is whether stealth shapes the overall design: whether players can gather information, enter unseen, use tools to manage danger, choose among approaches, and face meaningful consequences when discovered.

By that standard, Mirage makes a clear case for being stealth-focused. Ubisoft described it as an homage to the original Assassin’s Creed and a more condensed experience than recent entries, with the emphasis placed back on stealth gameplay. Its launch announcement similarly framed the game as a return to the series’ roots as a stealth game. Those are Ubisoft’s descriptions of its intent, not proof that stealth was absent from earlier games.
Tools and escape options
Throwing knives and smoke bombs support different stages of an infiltration: players can deal with a threat from a distance or create an opening to escape. Ubisoft also highlights tools and getaway planning as part of the game’s stealth approach. These options matter because stealth is not only about remaining unseen; it also involves deciding how to respond when a plan changes.

Black Box assassinations
Mirage brings back Black Box missions: large-scale assassinations designed to allow multiple ways of reaching and killing a target. Rather than making every objective a single prescribed sequence, these missions make choosing an approach part of the task. That flexibility gives stealth a role in planning as well as execution.
Social stealth and detection
Social stealth—the use of crowds and the surrounding environment to avoid notice—is central to the game’s appeal, according to GameSpot’s review. Detection is not always an automatic game over, though some mission conditions can fail. That distinction makes stealth consequential without treating every mistake as an instant restart.

Why “the first true stealth game” is disputed
Stealth has been part of Assassin’s Creed since the beginning. Ubisoft’s retrospective describes the original game’s hide-in-plain-sight approach and traces stealth abilities through later entries, including Mirage’s Assassin’s Focus. The series therefore has no clean historical break in which stealth disappears and then first arrives in Mirage.
Unity is a particularly relevant counterexample. PC Gamer has argued that its crouch control, stealth tools, and more demanding combat made it the first entry that felt like an actual stealth game. That is a critic’s interpretation, not an objective classification—but it shows why the word “first” depends on what a player counts as enough to qualify.

How Mirage compares with earlier entries
The distinction is not simply whether a game contains stealth mechanics. It is how much the rest of the experience asks players to use them. Comparing the games across a few design questions makes the disagreement easier to understand:
| Question | What it reveals |
|---|---|
| Does stealth shape the overall design? | Whether infiltration is a central way to play or one option among others. |
| Can players use social stealth? | Whether blending into crowds and using the environment are meaningful parts of avoiding notice. |
| Are tools and mission approaches varied? | Whether players can plan and adapt, rather than follow one fixed route. |
| What is the cost of detection? | Whether discovery changes the encounter, fails an objective, or is recoverable. |
Mirage stands out as a deliberate return to stealth emphasis, particularly after the larger role-playing entries. But that is a claim about its focus and direction, not proof that it invented stealth for the series. Ubisoft Bordeaux UX designer Antony Marques described the design philosophy as returning to the series’ roots while retaining modern accessibility options and feedback elements found in later games such as Valhalla.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

So, is Mirage the series’ first true stealth game?
If “true stealth game” means an Assassin’s Creed title that puts infiltration, social stealth, tools, and flexible assassinations near the center of the experience, Mirage is a strong fit—especially in contrast with the recent RPG entries. If “first” means the earliest game to make stealth a substantial part of play, the claim does not hold: earlier titles already used stealth, and Unity has its own defensible claim under a different definition.
The most accurate description is that Mirage is a stealth-focused return to the series’ roots. Calling it the “first true stealth game” captures how its emphasis feels to some players, but it remains an editorial judgment rather than an uncontested fact.
