For crafting and defendable bases with different threats, look at 7 Days to Die or ARK: Survival Evolved; for cooperative survival without constant player conflict, try Valheim or Sons of the Forest. These games share parts of Rust’s appeal, but none is a one-to-one replacement: the balance of PvP, building, survival systems, and exploration varies widely.
How these games compare with Rust
“Like Rust” can mean several things: gathering resources, crafting gear, building a base, surviving environmental or creature threats, exploring a dangerous world, or risking your progress against other players. Survival games vary in how much they emphasize systems such as hunger, thirst, temperature, disease, foraging, and crafting, as PC Gamer’s genre overview notes. PC Gamer’s guide to the best survival games on PC offers useful context for those differences.
The recommendations below are grouped by their strongest overlap with Rust, not ranked as interchangeable substitutes. The descriptions and platform details are reported by GameSpot’s 2026 games-like-Rust gallery; check current official listings for availability on a specific platform or region.
Closest to Rust’s PvP survival loop
1. DayZ
DayZ is the strongest match if the defining draw is surviving around other players. GameSpot calls it arguably the closest game on its list to Rust, highlighting scavenging, solo play, zombies, and a strong PvP emphasis. Its base building is more limited than Rust’s, so it is a better fit for tense encounters and survival than for elaborate fortifications. GameSpot lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

2. SCUM
SCUM leans into detailed survival simulation. It shares Rust’s pressure to manage survival while navigating a hostile world, but its distinguishing appeal is the depth of its simulation rather than a direct match for Rust’s base-building and player-conflict balance. GameSpot includes it among its survival-sandbox alternatives.
3. The Front
The Front combines crafting and base building with PvP and PvE elements. That mix makes it a candidate for players who want construction and the possibility of player conflict, though the balance of those modes is not described as identical to Rust’s. GameSpot presents it as one of the games that shares some of Rust’s survival-sandbox qualities.
Crafting and bases, with different threats
4. 7 Days to Die
7 Days to Die blends open-world survival, crafting, character progression, PvP, and zombies. It suits players who want to build expansive bases and defend them against threats, but the undead are a major part of its pressure in a way that changes the feel of survival compared with Rust. GameSpot describes both PvP and base building as part of the experience.

5. ARK: Survival Evolved
ARK: Survival Evolved keeps resource gathering, crafting, and large-scale base construction, then shifts the setting toward dinosaur hunting and taming. PvP depends on the server, so it is a better fit for players drawn to creature survival and building who are comfortable with server-specific competition than for anyone seeking guaranteed, constant player conflict.
6. Conan Exiles
Conan Exiles is a survival sandbox with kingdom-building ambitions. Its overlap with Rust is the combination of survival and construction; its distinctive emphasis is developing a larger settlement or domain in a fantasy setting. GameSpot includes it among the games that share parts of Rust’s open-ended sandbox appeal.
7. V Rising
V Rising mixes survival, building, and server-based PvP in a vampire setting. It is a natural option if you want to build and contend with other players but would rather trade Rust’s grounded survival setting for supernatural enemies and a distinct gothic world. PvP is tied to server choice rather than being a universal feature of every play experience.

Co-op and PvE survival instead of constant conflict
8. Valheim
Valheim is best suited to cooperative PvE. It centers progression around biomes and bosses, with room to build large bases; PvP is available on certain servers, but the main appeal described by GameSpot is cooperative survival rather than relentless player-versus-player pressure. Choose it when exploration, progression, and shared building matter more than Rust-style raids.
9. Sons of the Forest
Sons of the Forest moves toward horror and PvE. Its island setting, hostile creatures, caves, scavenging, and multiplayer offer survival tension, but GameSpot cautions that the base game does not feature much PvP. It fits players who want danger and co-op in a more focused horror setting, not those whose priority is fighting other survivors.
10. Icarus
Icarus is a PvE wilderness-survival option built around missions. It shares the resource-gathering and environmental-survival side of Rust while moving away from player-driven conflict. Consider it if you want structured objectives and wilderness challenges more than open-ended PvP competition.

11. Raft
Raft takes the resource collection and base-building idea out to sea. You build and expand on a floating platform while surviving an ocean setting, so the construction loop is familiar in broad strokes but the world and threats are quite different from Rust’s land-based sandbox.
Adjacent picks for exploration, crews, or loot stakes
12. No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky emphasizes exploration and building across a science-fiction setting. It has limited optional PvP, making it a much less direct match for Rust’s player-conflict tension. Pick it for discovery and construction, not as a substitute for persistent survival competition.
13. Sea of Thieves
Sea of Thieves shares the uncertainty of encountering other players, but its core frame is crew-based naval exploration and PvP rather than survival crafting and land-base defense. It belongs on this list for the social risk and exploration angle, not because it reproduces Rust’s building loop.
