If Avowed keeps crashing on an Xbox Series X or Series S, start with the low-risk checks: install available updates, fully quit and reopen the game, restart the console, and see whether the crash happens again in the same place. These are general troubleshooting steps, not eight fixes verified by Obsidian for Xbox. The developer’s published crash guide is for PC, so its Windows, graphics-driver, and PC graphics-setting instructions do not apply to Xbox consoles.
First, identify what kind of crash you’re seeing
Before changing anything, note whether Avowed crashes at startup, during a particular activity, or seemingly at random. Also check whether other games crash. These observations help distinguish an issue limited to Avowed from a broader console problem; they do not, by themselves, establish a cause.
- Only Avowed crashes: focus first on game updates, a clean relaunch, and reporting a repeatable game-specific problem.
- Other games or console functions also fail: consult Xbox support or service guidance rather than assuming Avowed is responsible. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S service guide is a general service reference, not an Avowed fix.
Eight sensible checks for Avowed crashes on Xbox
These steps are ordered from simple checks to issue reporting. They are general troubleshooting suggestions unless noted otherwise; they are not a developer-verified sequence or a guarantee of a fix.
- Check for an Avowed update. Install any update available for the game, then launch it again. Obsidian’s patch notes show that updates can address specific crashes, but a patch for one situation does not establish a fix for every crash. See the Patch 2.1 notes for an example.
- Check for an Xbox system update. Use the console’s available system-update controls and install an update if one is offered. This is a general console-maintenance check, not a documented Avowed-specific remedy.
- Fully quit Avowed, then reopen it. Close the game rather than simply returning to the Home screen, then start it again. The official sources cited here do not prescribe this as a specific fix for Avowed on Xbox.
- Restart the console. Restart the Xbox and test the game again. Treat this as a basic troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed resolution.
- Retry the same activity or save. After the update and relaunch checks, repeat the action or return to the area where the crash occurred. Note whether the failure happens at the same point or whether it was a one-off.
- Check whether another game also crashes. Try a different game and observe whether the problem is limited to Avowed. If several games or console functions are affected, seek Xbox support or service guidance; that pattern is diagnostic, not proof of hardware failure.
- Record a repeatable trigger. Write down where the crash occurs, what you did immediately beforehand, whether it began after an update, and whether it affects one save or multiple sessions. Include any error message. Obsidian’s bug-report guidance asks for a summary and steps to reproduce.
- Report a game-specific crash to Obsidian. Use the Avowed support collection and include that you are playing on Series X or Series S, when the crash occurs, the steps that reproduce it, and any error message. A clear report is more useful than a general description such as “the game crashes.”
What Obsidian’s crash advice does—and does not—cover
Obsidian’s article titled “What can I do if Avowed is crashing for me?” begins, “If you are experiencing crashes with Avowed, please try the following things:” Its instructions are PC-oriented, however. The article discusses Windows, graphics drivers, and PC graphics controls; it is not an Xbox Series X|S troubleshooting procedure. Do not try to install PC GPU drivers or look for PC-only settings such as ray tracing, upscaling, or NVIDIA Reflex in the Xbox version. Read the Obsidian crash article in its PC context.

One documented Avowed crash fix is narrowly specific
Obsidian’s Patch 2.1 notes say the patch fixed a crash that could occur when starting Photo Mode near a Xaurip Elder. That note documents a fix for that named situation; it does not mean all Xbox crashes have a known cause or remedy. Players also posted Series S and Series X crash reports on the Obsidian forums in February 2025, but those anecdotal reports do not establish current prevalence or a dependable fix.

If the crash occurs in multiple games or console functions, or the Xbox shows other persistent problems, consult Xbox support or service guidance. Avoid factory-resetting the console or deleting local saves as a first response: neither action is established here as an Avowed fix, and save changes can have consequences. Do not buy a cooling stand, external storage, or repair accessory on the assumption that it will resolve an Avowed-specific crash.
