For a mix of strong storytelling, memorable characters, inventive world-building and accessibility to nonplayers, The Last of Us, Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are the standouts. This is an editorial ranking, not a claim of objective consensus: it weighs story and character work, how each show adapts or expands its game world, accessibility to newcomers, animation or production craft, and reception where dated figures are available.

These shows take different routes from game to screen. Some adapt a specific game’s plot; others tell new stories in established settings. You generally do not need to play first—the entries below note where game knowledge adds context.

How this ranking works

The list ranks 13 distinct series rather than individual seasons. It considers narrative and character quality alongside adaptation choices, craft and accessibility. Reception figures are useful context, not a substitute for judgment: Rotten Tomatoes’ December 18, 2025 guide ranks seasons by Tomatometer, includes multiple seasons of the same shows and records audience scores separately. Its snapshot is not a definitive series ranking, and scores can change. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide lists, for example, The Last of Us Season 1 at 96% Tomatometer and 86% Popcornmeter.

“Based on a video game” can mean a close adaptation, a new story in a game universe, or a looser relationship through a shared source. The Witcher is excluded from this strict ranking: Netflix’s series is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, which also inspired the games, rather than adapting the games themselves.

The 13 best TV series based on video games

1. The Last of Us

Source and approach: Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us; a direct adaptation of the first game’s story in Season 1.

Why it ranks here: The show makes its post-apocalyptic journey work as character drama, not just a sequence of recognizable game moments. Joel and Ellie’s relationship gives the danger and bleak setting a human center. Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog Studio Head and a co-creator, writer and executive producer of the HBO series, said Season 1 adapted the entire first game.

Who should watch: Viewers who want a serious, emotionally driven drama, whether or not they play games. Druckmann told Sony Interactive Entertainment, “You don’t need to play the game to enjoy the show. That was always important. But if you do, and you watch the show, it will fill in certain gaps for the game.” Sony’s April 25, 2025 interview discusses that adaptation.

Caveat: It is a grim, often violent story, and its close connection to the first game means its biggest transformation is in how it tells the story rather than in inventing a new one.

Reception context: The Associated Press reported that the U.S. premiere drew 4.7 million viewers, citing Nielsen and HBO data; the finale drew 8.2 million, which HBO described as a series high. These are U.S. figures, not worldwide totals. The AP report also describes the show’s appeal beyond players.

2. Arcane

Source and approach: Riot Games’ League of Legends; an original story built around characters and places from the game world, not a retelling of a match or single game plot.

Why it ranks here: The relationship between sisters Vi and Jinx anchors a visually distinctive story about conflict between Piltover and Zaun. Its strong character focus and expressive animation make the setting legible without requiring viewers to know the multiplayer game. Netflix’s Arcane Season 2 guide identifies the series’ connection to League of Legends, released in 2009, and outlines that central conflict.

Who should watch: Viewers who enjoy animated dramas, complicated family relationships and elaborate fantasy-tech settings. It is one of the easiest entries here to recommend to someone who has never played its source game.

Caveat: Its world and cast are substantial, so the first episodes introduce several factions and characters before the story’s conflicts fully converge.

Reception context: Rotten Tomatoes’ December 18, 2025 season guide gives critics’ and audience scores separately; the two seasons’ audience figures differ. Those season-level snapshots describe reception at that date, not a permanent measure of the series.

3. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Source and approach: CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk setting; a standalone story in Night City rather than an adaptation of a particular game plot.

Rank #2
The Twilight Zone: The Complete Series
  • Genre: Science Fiction
  • Number of Discs: 24
  • Number of Tracks: 0
  • Playback Duration: 4474
  • Movie Title: The Twilight Zone: The Complete Series

Why it ranks here: The fast, vivid animation suits a world of body modification, technology and extreme inequality, while the story follows a street kid trying to survive. Netflix describes it as a standalone 10-episode story and credits CD Projekt Red with production and Studio Trigger with animation. Its Media Center page gives the premise and credits.

Who should watch: Viewers looking for a compact, high-energy animated science-fiction tragedy. Familiarity with Cyberpunk 2077 is not required to follow the characters or their predicament.

Caveat: It is violent, emotionally harsh and deliberately intense; its compressed 10-episode story leaves little room to linger.

Continuation: CD Projekt Red’s official Edgerunners page lists a second series for Fall 2026, exclusively on Netflix. That is a scheduled window, which may change.

4. Fallout

Source and approach: Bethesda’s Fallout games; a new story in the franchise’s post-apocalyptic universe rather than a direct adaptation of one game’s plot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it ranks here: The setting’s contrast between retro-futurist optimism and brutal wasteland survival gives the show room for dark humor, spectacle and distinct characters. A new story also lets newcomers enter without needing to know the games’ history.

Who should watch: Viewers who like post-apocalyptic adventure with a satirical edge, as well as existing fans curious to see the world expanded on television.

Caveat: Its tonal shifts—from grotesque comedy to violence and bleakness—will not suit viewers seeking a consistently serious drama. Rotten Tomatoes’ December 18, 2025 guide reports separate season-level scores; its Season 2 values are a dated snapshot, not a permanent series verdict.

Why adaptations matter to players: Ampere Analysis reported in September 2025 that the 2024 Prime Video launch coincided with nearly 500% growth in Fallout franchise monthly active users. The same analysis says hit game adaptations can be associated with player-number increases of up to 490%; neither figure means every adaptation produces that result. Ampere’s report is the source for those claims.

5. Castlevania

Source and approach: Konami’s Castlevania games; an animated adaptation drawing on the franchise’s characters and mythology.

Why it ranks here: Its gothic setting, supernatural conflict and ensemble of hunters and monsters give the series a clear identity. It is a strong pick for viewers who want adult-oriented fantasy animation rather than a light game tie-in.

Who should watch: Fans of vampire stories, dark fantasy and stylized action.

Caveat: The violence and grim tone are pronounced, and the show’s multi-season story is not a one-sitting, self-contained adaptation.

6. Pokémon

Source and approach: The Pokémon games and broader franchise; animated series that explore the world and its creatures rather than reproducing one game campaign beat for beat.

Why it ranks here: The franchise’s durable appeal lies in the bond between people and Pokémon, the sense of discovery and the clarity of its adventure premise. Its many iterations offer an approachable entry point for younger viewers and longtime fans alike.

Who should watch: Families and viewers who want an optimistic adventure with friendship, exploration and creature battles.

Caveat: “Pokémon” covers multiple series and formats, so its tone and continuity vary; it is not a single unified television story. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 guide includes Pokémon Concierge as a distinct season entry, not as a verdict on the entire franchise.

7. Sonic the Hedgehog

Source and approach: Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog games; animated and live-action television versions have expanded the character and universe in different ways.

Why it ranks here: Sonic’s speed, humor and recognizable cast translate naturally into energetic, accessible adventure. The franchise is a useful choice when the priority is a lighter, family-friendly watch rather than a prestige drama.

Who should watch: Families and younger audiences, especially viewers already fond of Sonic.

Caveat: The shows differ considerably in format and reception. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide notes a disappointing Tomatometer response for Sonic Prime; that is a critic-score observation about that entry, not a universal audience judgment of every Sonic series.

8. The Cuphead Show!

Source and approach: Studio MDHR’s Cuphead; an animated comedy that adapts the game’s characters and distinctive visual style into episodic stories.

Why it ranks here: The rubber-hose animation evokes the game’s vintage-cartoon look, while the short, mischievous adventures suit viewers who want visual comedy rather than a long adaptation arc.

Who should watch: Families and fans of old-fashioned cartoon slapstick.

Caveat: Its episodic comedy is a different kind of appeal from the sustained character drama at the top of this list, and its game’s challenging boss fights are not its central focus.

9. Dota: Dragon’s Blood

Source and approach: Valve’s Dota 2; an animated fantasy story using the game’s world and characters.

Why it ranks here: It leans into large-scale fantasy, magical conflict and a broad cast, making it a natural option for viewers who want a game-world adaptation with epic stakes.

Who should watch: Viewers already comfortable with sprawling fantasy animation, particularly those interested in Dota lore.

Caveat: The amount of world-building can make the opening stretch feel dense for newcomers, and familiarity with the game’s roster may add context.

10. Halo

Source and approach: Microsoft’s Halo games; a live-action television story set in the franchise universe, not simply a filmed version of the games’ missions.

Why it ranks here: The scale of its science-fiction conflict and the recognizable universe make it an obvious watch for players curious about a different presentation of the setting.

Who should watch: Viewers seeking military science fiction and fans willing to see a familiar world reinterpreted.

Caveat: Reception illustrates a gap between critical response and some longtime players’ expectations: Rotten Tomatoes’ guide notes that critics responded better than fans of the games. A score or franchise name alone cannot predict whether a particular viewer will like the adaptation.

11. Pokémon Concierge

Source and approach: The Pokémon franchise; a stop-motion series with a new setting and premise rather than a game-plot adaptation.

Why it ranks here: Its slower, gentler approach offers a distinct alternative to battle-focused Pokémon stories, and its craft makes the franchise feel fresh in a small-scale format.

Who should watch: Viewers looking for cozy, low-stakes animation, including people who know Pokémon but want something calmer.

Caveat: It is intentionally quiet and may not satisfy viewers seeking tournament action or a conventional adventure. Rotten Tomatoes listed Season 1 in its December 2025 guide; that is a season-specific guide entry.

12. Castlevania: Nocturne

Source and approach: Konami’s Castlevania franchise; an animated continuation set in its gothic world, with its own characters and historical setting.

Why it ranks here: It gives the franchise another visually ambitious supernatural conflict and extends the appeal of the original series for viewers who want more of its world.

Who should watch: Viewers who enjoy gothic action and are open to a new chapter in an established adaptation universe.

Caveat: It is a less natural starting point than a self-contained series, and its connection to the earlier show is part of its appeal. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide lists Season 2 separately, so that placement should not be read as an overall franchise ranking.

13. Resident Evil

Source and approach: Capcom’s Resident Evil games; television adaptations have used the franchise’s horror setting and mythology in different ways.

Why it ranks here: Few game franchises offer a more immediately televisual blend of bio-horror, survival and conspiratorial menace. It belongs on a broad survey of game adaptations, even though its television track record is uneven.

Who should watch: Horror fans willing to explore different screen interpretations of the same game franchise.

Caveat: The shows are not interchangeable, and a familiar name does not guarantee a faithful or well-received adaptation. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide describes some Resident Evil entries as disappointing by Tomatometer; critic reception should not be treated as a measure of every viewer’s enjoyment.
