Good Pokémon fan projects range from full-length RPGs to browser-based battle tools, so there is no single setup—or style of play—to expect. These nine picks include original regions and creatures, story-driven campaigns, fusion mechanics, roguelike runs, and online battles. The list is a curated set of examples, not a verified recreation of a particular 15-game ranking: the available sources do not establish that article’s full lineup.

How to choose a Pokémon fan game

Start with the format. A standalone fan game is a separate project; a ROM hack alters an existing Pokémon game and may require a patch, a legally obtained game image, and an emulator; a browser experience runs online and may focus on battles or repeatable runs rather than a traditional campaign. Those formats are not interchangeable, and the sources available here do not confirm current device support or download routes for every title below.

Then choose the kind of play you want: an original region, a reworked story, unusual progression, Pokémon fusion, procedural runs, or competitive-style battles. Treat feature counts and online functions below as claims from their named sources, not as independently verified current-version specifications.

Story campaigns and original-world adventures

Pokémon Uranium

Uranium’s appeal is a new region, Tandor, and a roster that includes original Pokémon and a Nuclear type. The project’s community site describes “150+ Original Pokemon” and calls it “A Fan game in a new region!” (Pokémon Uranium community site). Bulbapedia’s historical summary gives a different count—166 original Pokémon—and reports that the game was built in RPG Maker XP, released in 2016 after nine years of development, and included online trading and battling (Bulbapedia). Those counts come from different descriptions; neither should be read as a live inventory.

#1 Best Overall
Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
  • Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
  • Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

Availability needs particular care. Bulbapedia says the developers removed official download links after receiving DMCA notices, after which fans continued maintaining patches. That history does not verify the safety of third-party mirrors. Look for project-maintained channels and avoid treating an arbitrary download site as an official source.

Pokémon Insurgence

Insurgence is a story-focused fan game distinguished in the source list by its use of Mega Stones and Mega Evolution (Bulbapedia’s fan-game overview). It is a natural pick for players who want a campaign built around familiar Pokémon concepts with a changed setting and progression. The cited overview does not establish its current download route, supported devices, or version-specific feature set, so check the project’s own channels before setting it up.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus - US Version
  • Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
  • Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
  • Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
  • Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
  • Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale

Pokémon Reborn

Reborn is presented as a substantial RPG campaign with a large roster and online features. PokemonCoders lists 21 starters, 807 Pokémon, online battling, and trading, but those are that page’s claims rather than independently checked specifications for a current release (PokemonCoders). If team-building breadth and a long-form story are your priorities, it is worth investigating; verify the version and online feature status with the project before relying on those details.

Pokémon Godra

Godra emphasizes role and progression choices rather than a single narrow path. PokemonCoders describes options that include becoming a Safari Zone warden, joining the military, or rising to Elite Four leader (PokemonCoders). That makes it an interesting lead for players who want their campaign to branch into different roles. The source does not confirm a current access route or the state of those paths in the latest version.

Pokémon Violet - US Version
  • Embark on a new Pokémon adventure
  • Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities.
  • Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea.
  • Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure.

Pokémon Fire Ash

Fire Ash retells Ash’s anime adventures as a playable journey. The PokemonCoders list says it includes more than 50 Gym battles (PokemonCoders); that is a figure from the list, not a separately verified count for the current build. Choose it for an anime-inspired tour rather than an original-region premise, and check the project’s own current information for availability.

Games with a central mechanic or repeatable-run structure

Pokémon Infinite Fusion

Infinite Fusion makes combining Pokémon its defining idea, producing hybrid creatures and a different team-building puzzle from a conventional campaign. PokemonCoders reported “22,801 and counting” fusion sprites on a page updated August 7, 2024, with an April 2025 editorial update (PokemonCoders). That dated figure is not a live count or an independently audited total. Check the project’s own channels for the current build and instructions rather than assuming a particular download or device setup.

  • Battle wild Dynamax Pokémon in Max Raid Battles and try catching them***

PokéRogue

PokéRogue takes the experience toward repeatable roguelike runs, with procedurally generated worlds, according to the fan-game list (PokemonCoders). It suits players who would rather adapt to changing runs than follow only a fixed, long campaign. The list identifies it as browser-based; confirm the current official site and access details before playing.

Browser-based online play

Pokémon Showdown

Showdown is best understood as an online battle simulator, not a story campaign. The fan-game list describes browser play, multiple battle modes, and team choices (PokemonCoders). It is the most direct fit here if your goal is to build teams and battle without progressing through an RPG. Check the service itself for available formats and rules, which can change.

  • Use the power of Mega Evolution in battle and take on rampaging Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon
  • Compete in the Z-A Royale each night to test your skills and try to become the strongest Pokémon Trainer

PokéForce

PokéForce is described by its project site as a fan-made MMORPG in a reimagined Johto, with persistent online play, exploration, professions, player-driven economies, and challenging battles (PokéForce). Its site has published public-test updates and says the project is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo or Game Freak. Because test and launch status can change, consult the project site for the current state before planning to play.

Which format fits your setup?

Format What it means What to verify
Standalone fan game A separate game made with development tools rather than a patch to an existing Pokémon title. Uranium’s About page says it was built in RPG Maker XP (Pokémon Uranium About page). Current project download, operating-system support, and version-specific requirements.
ROM hack A modification based on data from an existing game; commonly played through an emulator, according to PokemonCoders’ explanation (PokemonCoders). Required base game, patching instructions, emulator compatibility, and whether the project page provides a patch rather than a game image.
Browser experience Played online, often without a conventional campaign. PokéRogue is listed as a roguelike and Showdown as a battle simulator (PokemonCoders). Use the project’s own current site; check whether accounts, supported browsers, or online features have changed.

Broadly, fan games can emulate main-series or spin-off Pokémon experiences; many are ROM hacks, while standalone projects use separate development tools, Bulbapedia explains (Bulbapedia). PokemonCoders likewise distinguishes ROM hacks from standalone projects and notes that device support varies (PokemonCoders). Before downloading anything, follow the project’s own setup guidance, confirm the required format, and be cautious of unofficial mirrors. Fan projects can change or disappear, and this list does not establish the current availability or safety of every download.
