Knuckles the Echidna is Angel Island’s solemn guardian, but his story also includes a trick by Dr. Eggman, an uneasy friendship with Sonic, and abilities that open routes Sonic cannot take. SEGA’s Classic and modern profiles differ in their listed height and weight, so those figures are best read as version-specific profile details—not as an in-game explanation.
Who is Knuckles the Echidna?
1. He guards the Master Emerald
SEGA’s modern profile places Knuckles on Angel Island, where he protects the giant Master Emerald. SEGA’s Classic profile likewise describes him as the Emerald’s guardian and a descendant of the echidna clan. SEGA Sonic Channel’s modern Knuckles profile and Classic Knuckles profile present this as central to both versions.
2. The role goes back as far as he can remember
In a 2021 Sonic Channel feature, SEGA says Knuckles had apparently been on the island and guarding the Emerald for as long as he could remember, even though he did not know the full history behind the responsibility. 3. He is a treasure hunter as well as a guardian
SEGA’s modern profile calls Knuckles a first-rate treasure hunter and a martial artist. The combination fits his role: he is formidable in a fight, but his interests are not limited to guarding the Master Emerald.

4. Eggman tricked him into seeing Sonic as the enemy

5. Rivalry does not rule out friendship

6. An ancestral pair of gloves gets a teasing reception
In the same official short story, Knuckles initially turns down a pair of combat gloves passed down by his ancestors, saying his own gloves are enough to protect what matters. What can Knuckles do in Sonic?
7. His glide can change how he crosses a level

8. He can climb walls
Knuckles’ ability to climb walls adds another way to navigate a stage. Alongside gliding, it helps distinguish his route through the classic zones from Sonic’s; the precise routes depend on the game and level.
9. Digging is also on his modern profile
SEGA’s modern character profile lists digging among Knuckles’ talents, alongside climbing, gliding and punching. This is a profile-listed ability; it should not be taken to mean that every game gives him the same digging mechanic.

10. His fists are built for breaking through obstacles
SEGA describes Knuckles’ punches as powerful enough to break rocks. His spiked fists are also called out in the Classic profile and his Sonic Superstars character listing, making them one of his clearest visual and gameplay signatures. 11. The modern profile lists him at 110 cm and 40 kg
SEGA’s modern Sonic Channel profile lists Knuckles as 110 cm tall and 40 kg. These are figures published in the character profile, not real-world measurements.
12. The Classic profile lists different figures
SEGA’s Classic Knuckles profile lists him at 83 cm tall and 30 kg. SEGA’s cited profiles do not explain why the measurements differ, so the figures should stay attached to their respective profile eras rather than be treated as a change explained by the games.

SEGA’s modern profile says Knuckles likes fruit, especially grapes. This preference is listed on that profile; it should not automatically be assigned to every version of the character.
14. Strong sunlight is listed as something he dislikes
The same modern profile lists strong sunlight among Knuckles’ dislikes. It does not explain the reason, so there is no basis here to attach a backstory to the preference.

15. His first encounter with Sonic is tied to Sonic the Hedgehog 3

16. Sonic & Knuckles connected to Sonic 3 with a cartridge lock-on
Sonic & Knuckles was designed to connect with Sonic the Hedgehog 3: joining the cartridges with the lock-on system created the combined Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles experience, including its true ending.
