These eight mobile games offer very different ways to collect creatures: explore the real world, tame monsters in a story-driven RPG, breed and manage a roster, or take on short action hunts. The right pick depends less on a universal “best” and more on the play loop you want—and whether you need a game that works well offline.
Choose by the kind of monster-catching you want
The shortlist spans several subgenres, not one shared formula. Use the table to narrow it down by play style; the offline descriptions are broad guidance from the games’ published descriptions, not independent connectivity tests. Check each game’s current store listing for availability, device requirements, pricing, and regional support.
| Game | Core play style | Best fit | Offline friendliness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon GO | Explore real locations to encounter Pokémon, collect items, battle other Trainers, and join raids. | Players who want walking and location-based collection. | Low: its real-world encounters and live features rely on an internet connection and location services. |
| Monster Legends | Collect and breed monsters, build a roster, and take it into battles. | Players who enjoy team-building and ongoing collection and upgrade loops. | Low: its roster and battle systems are centered on connected play. |
| Dragon Mania Legends | Raise and breed dragons, develop a collection, and battle. | Players drawn to creature raising and management alongside battles. | Limited: expect online features to require a connection; offline scope can vary. |
| Jurassic World Alive | Find and collect dinosaurs through a real-world, location-oriented loop. | Dinosaur fans who like exploring and collecting. | Low: location-based collection and live features depend on connectivity. |
| Nexomon: Extinction | Follow a story, tame creatures, and fight in turn-based battles. | Players looking for a more traditional, story-led creature RPG. | Higher than location-based games: its campaign is a more natural fit for solo play, though check the platform listing for exact offline support. |
| Coromon | Play a story-led creature-catching RPG with turn-based battles. | Players who want a focused campaign rather than a real-world collection loop. | Higher than location-based games: its campaign is suited to solo play, but exact offline behavior should be confirmed for your version. |
| Monster Hunter Now | Explore outdoors, complete quests, hunt monsters, gather materials, and upgrade weapons and armor; nearby co-op is also available. | Players who want brief, skill-focused action hunts and gear progression. | Low: outdoor exploration and live play make a connection important. |
| Pocket Mortys | Collect Mortys and battle them in a creature-RPG format. | Rick and Morty fans who want a compact character-collection game. | Not established: check the current listing and game details for offline support. |
Which game fits each play style?
For real-world exploration: Pokémon GO or Jurassic World Alive
Pokémon GO is built around encounters in the real and virtual worlds, with items, Trainer battles, and raids among its activities. The Pokémon Company describes it as a mobile game for iPhone and Android. Scopely reported that Pokémon GO had more than 100 million unique players in 2024 in its March 12, 2025 acquisition announcement; that is a company-reported figure for one game, not a measure of the mobile monster-catching genre as a whole.
Jurassic World Alive points the same broad direction toward location-based discovery, but swaps Pokémon for dinosaurs. Choose either only if you want the real-world loop: being indoors or unable to use location services can make this style a poor match.

For a story and turn-based battles: Coromon or Nexomon: Extinction
These are the shortlist’s clearest picks if you want to follow a campaign, catch or tame creatures, and battle in turns instead of checking a map for live encounters. They are often a better fit than timed collection loops for players who dislike feeling pushed to grind, though that is a qualitative comparison rather than a measured difficulty ranking. If offline play matters, confirm the exact platform version’s requirements before buying or downloading.
For breeding, collecting, and managing a roster: Monster Legends or Dragon Mania Legends
Monster Legends emphasizes assembling and developing a monster roster; Dragon Mania Legends centers more directly on raising and breeding dragons. Both suit players who enjoy nurturing a collection and improving teams over time, rather than treating catching as a single encounter followed by a battle.

For action hunts and gear progression: Monster Hunter Now
Monster Hunter Now is the action-oriented choice, not a turn-based taming RPG. Scopely lists outdoor exploration, quests, monster hunts, material gathering, weapon and armor upgrades, and nearby co-op as parts of its loop, and says the game is available on iOS and Android. Pick it for short hunts where learning combat and improving equipment are central.
For a familiar cartoon cast: Pocket Mortys
Pocket Mortys is the franchise-specific option for fans of Rick and Morty who want a creature-collection battle game. It is the most distinct fit in this lineup: choose it for the characters and presentation, rather than expecting the exploration, campaign, or action-hunt emphasis of the other entries.

What to know about online play and availability
There is no reliable one-size-fits-all answer to whether these games need Wi-Fi. Location-based games and games built around live events are the least suitable for disconnected play; a single-player campaign is a more promising fit, but platform versions and features can differ. Mobile internet may work where Wi-Fi is unavailable, but location-based play still needs location services and a suitable real-world setting.
Current store availability, pricing, device requirements, regional support, and service status for all eight titles are not established here. Check the official game page or the Apple App Store or Google Play listing for your region before committing, especially for older titles. The list is a genre map, not a tested ranking or a claim that every game is available in every market today.

How the shortlist fits the wider mobile genre
The range is broader than the phrase “monster catching” may suggest: real-world collection, turn-based creature RPGs, breeding and base management, and action hunting all sit beside one another. Pocket Gamer’s August 22, 2024 mobile list also includes creature-taming games such as EvoCreo, Monster Legends, Nexomon: Extinction, and Coromon. That offers genre context, not confirmation of their current store availability.
Scopely announced that its acquisition of Niantic’s games business closed on May 29, 2025, bringing Pokémon GO and Monster Hunter Now into its portfolio. This is a dated corporate update; consult Scopely’s announcement for the company’s stated details.
