In the base game, catch Xerneas in Main Mission 40, Yveltal in Main Mission 41, then return to Hotel Z after both captures to begin the mission for Zygarde. Postgame EX missions add Mewtwo and the Mythical Pokémon Diancie. The paid Mega Dimension DLC adds more Legendary and Mythical encounters through story battles, side missions, crafted-donut portals and Special Scans. This guide marks Mythical Pokémon separately, since they are often included in searches for “all Legendaries.”

Which Pokémon are included, and what do you need?

The base-game story Legendaries are Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde. Mewtwo is another Legendary available after the ending, while Diancie is Mythical. The Mega Dimension DLC adds Legendary Pokémon such as Heatran and Groudon, as well as Mythicals including Darkrai and Hoopa.

The DLC story follows completion of the base-game ending. Nintendo says Mega Dimension works with either the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 version, but the DLC must be loaded on a console that also has a copy of Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It is paid DLC; the encounter routes below do not apply to the base game alone.

How to get the base-game Legendary Pokémon

Pokémon Classification How to get it
Xerneas Legendary Catch it as the objective of Main Mission 40, “The One That Gives.”
Yveltal Legendary Catch it as the objective of Main Mission 41, “The One That Takes.”
Zygarde Legendary After catching Xerneas and Yveltal, return to Hotel Z to start Main Mission 42, “To Keep the World in Balance.” Follow the mission to Wild Zone 20 for the encounter.

The mission names and numbers above are reported by the PowerPyx walkthrough. Zygarde is gated behind both earlier captures; it is not the next encounter simply for reaching a particular point in the story.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
  • As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.

How to get Diancie and Mewtwo after the ending

Both Pokémon require finishing the game and receiving an item through Mystery Gift before their EX side missions can be completed. For these gifts, an internet connection and a linked Nintendo Account are required; Nintendo Switch Online is not.

Pokémon Classification Gift prerequisite Mission route
Diancie Mythical Receive Diancite through Mystery Gift after finishing the game. Go to the Looker Bureau and follow the EX mission involving Mimi to recruit Diancie.
Mewtwo Legendary Receive Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y through Mystery Gift after finishing the game. Visit the Lysandre Labs lead-in to activate EX Side Mission “Project Code: M,” then complete the mission to recruit Mewtwo.

The gift items unlock the mission routes; they are not the Pokémon themselves. The Diancie and Mewtwo requirements are described in official Pokémon announcements.

How to get Legendary Pokémon in the Mega Dimension story

Start the DLC story only after completing the base-game ending. These encounters are part of DLC progression rather than the base-game Legendary sequence.

Pokémon Classification Route
Heatran Legendary Encounter it as a Rogue Mega Evolution during the DLC story in Hyperspace Infernal Arena. Defeat it, then catch it.
Darkrai Mythical Progress the DLC story and make the Bad Dreams Cruller to reach the distortion above Prism Tower/Newmoon Nightmare. Defeat Darkrai and its Mega phase, then catch it.
Hoopa Mythical Progress through the DLC story and postgame. The later Hoopa Unbound encounter follows the Prison Bottle lead at Hotel Z; Hoopa Unbound is a form, not an additional species.

How to get Groudon, Kyogre and Rayquaza

After Darkrai, continue into the DLC’s post-story research. The three encounters follow a sequence of crafted donuts and portals; the forms battled during these encounters do not count as additional Pokémon species.

Kyogre Legendary Follow the parallel post-story route, craft the Alpha donut and enter the Primordial Sea portal. Defeat Kyogre and Primal Kyogre.
Rayquaza Legendary After both Groudon and Kyogre, make the Delta donut and follow the route to Sky Pillar. Battle Rayquaza and Mega Rayquaza.

Which post-Rayquaza DLC Pokémon come from side missions?

After Rayquaza, several Legendary and Mythical encounters are tied to individual side missions or research leads. These are separate from the Special Scan hunts below.

Pokémon Classification Route
Meltan and Melmetal Mythical Take the Meltan side mission after Rayquaza. Its follow-up encounter in Hyperspace Lumiose provides Melmetal.
Magearna Mythical Complete the Magearna side mission, which requires a large Mega Shard contribution. Serebii reports a requirement of 999 shards.
Volcanion Mythical Follow Mable’s research mission to release Volcanion from the problematic Poké Ball and catch it.
Genesect Mythical Buy its four Drives from the TM vendor, then follow the resulting intel to the distortion in Wild Zone 13.
Marshadow Mythical Follow the ghost-child clue and investigate the training court in Rogue Sector 1 when the shadow is aligned as required.
Zeraora Mythical Complete the secret Raging Lightning route: trade for Popping Candy, have Ansha make the Plasma donut, then defeat and catch Rogue Mega Zeraora.

Which Pokémon require Special Scans?

Special Scans open Unknown Zones where these Pokémon can be encountered. Unlike a single fixed story capture, the hunt may take repeated scans.

Is Eternal Floette a Legendary Pokémon?

No. Eternal Floette’s Mega form is a special postgame form, not a separate Legendary species. PowerPyx reports that winning the reward match in Infinite Z-A Royale 15 times after the story unlocks Mega Eternal Floette. This is a distinct unlock from the Legendary and Mythical captures listed above.

Why some DLC guides give different exact steps

The DLC encounter routes are documented in specialist references such as Serebii and NintendoSoup, but published guides differ on some mission numbering and donut recipe details. The routes here give the broad progression rather than unverified exact recipe quantities or coordinates. Follow the current in-game mission text for those specifics.

  • For the first time ever, Trainers and their Pokémon will move around and take action in real time during battles. Pokémon will unleash their moves when their Trainers command them to. In addition to type matchups, there will be new mechanics to consider, such as the precise timing for swapping out your Pokémon or using moves, the different lengths of time moves will take to launch, and how big an area the moves will impact.
  • In Lumiose City, Pokémon can go beyond Evolution by undergoing Mega Evolution! When a Trainer’s Key Stone resonates with the Mega Stone held by their Pokémon, the Pokémon will do more than just change shape and size – it will unlock a new level of power, which could turn the tide of battle!
