If 33 Immortals freezes or crashes on your Steam Deck, there is no confirmed universal fix. Start by updating SteamOS and restarting, then temporarily close third-party apps. If the problem continues, test a different Proton compatibility tool as a reversible troubleshooting step—not a guaranteed cure—and report persistent failures to Thunder Lotus with your game and system details.
Start with the low-risk Steam Deck checks
- Update SteamOS and restart. Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install any available update, and restart the Deck. This is Valve’s general troubleshooting guidance for Steam Deck software issues: Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.
- Temporarily close third-party apps. If you installed tools through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them and restart before testing the game again. This helps check whether another application is contributing to instability; it does not establish that third-party apps are the cause.
- Check the game’s current compatibility details. In your Steam Library or on the Store page, look at the compatibility information displayed for the Deck. Valve defines Verified as working great out of the box, Playable as potentially requiring manual adjustments, Unsupported as not currently considered playable, and Unknown as not yet checked. Ratings can change as reviews continue, so use the live listing rather than relying on an old label: Steam Deck Verified.
Test Proton only if the basic checks do not help
For the Steam version, open the game’s Properties > Compatibility menu and enable the option to force a Steam Play compatibility tool. Valve’s general guidance recommends trying the latest Proton. If the game is already using the latest version, you can test another installed Proton version to see whether behavior changes. Change only one setting at a time and compare the same activity or encounter.
Community reports are mixed, not proof of a fix. In a July 2026 Steam discussion, one player said Proton 10.0-4 let them get through a Lucifer fight without freezing, but a later report in the same thread said the freeze returned on that version. Treat Proton switching as a diagnostic experiment, not a permanent solution: “Game freeze on Deck since Proton 11 ?”.
Match the troubleshooting to where it fails
Freeze during a boss fight
Note which encounter triggers the freeze and whether it happens at the same point each time. If you test Proton, retry that same encounter so you can compare results. The reports of freezes during Lucifer or other boss fights are player-specific and do not establish a single cause.

Stall before a boss-room loading screen
A June 2026 player discussion describes a Deck getting stuck before the boss-room loading screen. Another player mentioned playing docked and suggested a 30 fps cap after describing slowdown, but that is an unverified anecdote—not an official or confirmed fix for crashes. Startup or other compatibility problems
A separate Proton issue reports slow startup, difficulty joining raids, and missing title-screen video and daily quests on a Radeon 6750 XT desktop Linux system using Proton Experimental. That report is not from Steam Deck hardware, so it cannot identify the cause of a Deck crash, but it shows why the exact symptom and device matter when reporting a problem: Proton issue #9869: 33 Immortals.

Check for game updates, then report a persistent bug
Install the latest game update and check Thunder Lotus’s official 33 Immortals announcements and hotfix notes for a fix matching your symptoms. The developer documented a specific Dark Woods room issue that could crash players trying to connect. That fix addresses that reported situation; it does not establish that all Steam Deck crashes are resolved.

What not to try as a routine first step
The available official guidance and reports do not support deleting compatibility data, resetting saves, reinstalling SteamOS, or buying hardware as standard fixes for this specific problem. Start with reversible software checks and provide the developer with enough detail to distinguish your issue from other reports.
