Censored Pokémon Cards: The Artwork Changes and What “Banned” Really Means

Collectors call some Pokémon cards “banned” because Japanese artwork or names changed in English releases. Here are ten documented examples—and how that differs from an actual tournament ban.

“Banned Pokémon cards” usually means cards whose Japanese artwork or names were changed for English-language releases—not cards prohibited in tournaments. The documented examples include artwork recolors, altered details, complete redraws, and renamed cards. The available evidence supports ten named card subjects, not a verified list of 30 distinct censorship events, so counting reprints as separate examples would be misleading.

What “banned” means in discussions of Pokémon card art

Collectors often use “banned” or “censored” for Japanese card images that were changed or left out when cards were localized for English-language release. That usage is different from a tournament ban. Pokémon’s official tournament rules resources include a separate banned-card list, and legality depends on the format.

The historical comparisons below are based chiefly on a collector guide updated September 27, 2026. It documents card identifiers and visible differences, but does not establish an official rationale for every change. Where a motive is not confirmed, the distinction between what the artwork shows and why it may have changed matters.

Documented Japanese-to-English artwork changes

These ten named subjects have reported Japanese and English versions with visible changes. The set names and card numbers identify the specific comparison; separate printings of a subject are not automatically separate censorship events.

Jynx: a recolored character

Japanese Expansion Pack #48 shows Jynx with black skin; English Base Set #31 recolors it purple, a design followed by later English prints. The English Neo Revelation Jynx is an exception that retains the earlier design. The change is commonly discussed in the context of criticism that the original design resembled a racist blackface caricature; the cited collector guide does not provide an official statement of the decision’s rationale.

Grimer: redirected eyes

Japanese Rocket Gang #4 depicts Grimer looking upward toward a schoolgirl. English Team Rocket #57 redirects Grimer’s eyes. The art difference is observable; a more specific intent is not established by the cited guide.

Koga’s Ninja Trick: a replaced symbol

Japanese Challenge from the Darkness #83 includes a Buddhist manji symbol; English Gym Challenge #115 substitutes a different emblem. The manji has a religious and historical meaning distinct from the Nazi swastika, though the similar appearance can lead Western viewers to confuse the two.

Sabrina’s Gengar: changed background details

The Japanese card’s background includes cemetery or cross imagery that is replaced or removed in the English Gym Heroes version. The difference is visible, but the available account does not establish the localization team’s reason.

Sabrina’s Gaze: new English artwork

Japanese Challenge from the Darkness #78 shows Sabrina holding a Master Ball, with her fingers positioned so some viewers may read the gesture as rude. English Gym Heroes #125 uses new art. “Read as” is important here: the evidence does not establish that the original gesture was intentional.

Misty’s Tears: a different image

Japanese Leaders’ Stadium #69 shows a silhouette of Misty beside Staryu. English Gym Challenge #118 replaces it with a close-up of Misty crying. The original is sometimes described as a nude silhouette; that description refers to the stylized silhouette, not a detailed nude image. This artwork change did not itself make the English card tournament-illegal.

Arcade Game: slot machines removed

Japanese Gold, Silver, to a New World… #90 depicts slot machines. The English Neo Genesis #83 card is named Arcade Game and changes the image.

Card-Flip Game: altered Game Corner art

Japanese Gold, Silver, to a New World… #80 and English Neo Genesis #92 have different artwork, in the context of the Game Corner’s gambling imagery.

Moo-Moo Milk: a new scene

Japanese Gold, Silver, to a New World… #77 shows Sentret drinking directly from an udder. English Neo Genesis #101 instead depicts Clefairy and bottles of milk.

Magmortar: a changed pose

Japanese Dragon Blade #8 points Magmortar’s smoking cannon arm toward the viewer. English Dragons Exalted #21 changes the pose. This is a later example from 2012; the cited account does not confirm the reason for the change.

Why this is not a verified list of 30 cards

The examples above establish ten named card subjects, but not 30 distinct censorship events. Some subjects have multiple printings, and a list can reach a larger number by counting individual Japanese and English versions separately. That is a count of card versions, not necessarily a count of separate edits. Japan-only cards omitted from English releases because jokes or named owners did not transfer cleanly are also localization choices, not automatically censorship.

For a useful comparison, identify the language, set, card number, and type of change—such as recoloring, a small edit, a redraw, or a renamed card. That prevents a reprint or unrelated localization decision from being presented as another independently documented censorship case.

Kadabra’s hiatus was a different kind of story

Kadabra’s absence from Pokémon cards followed a legal dispute, rather than an artwork change. According to Pooka’s secondary account, illusionist Uri Geller objected to the character’s resemblance to him; after he lifted his objection in 2020, Kadabra returned in Japanese and English Pokémon Card 151 releases in 2023. That history belongs alongside card-ban discussions, but it is not an example of censored card art.

Were these cards actually banned from tournaments?

Artwork edits do not, by themselves, determine tournament legality. Pokémon’s March 12, 2026 announcement made no changes to the Standard banned list and said Medicham V would be banned in Expanded effective April 10, 2026. The stated gameplay concern was Yoga Loop’s ability, in combination with effects that place damage counters, to take an additional turn and potentially win quickly. For current play, check the official rules and banned-card resources for the format and date that apply.

How to compare or collect the altered versions

If you are looking for a particular artwork, verify the card itself rather than relying on a listing title. Japanese originals and English localized counterparts can have different set names and numbering.

  • Check the language, set name, and card number against a card reference.
  • Compare the listing photos with the specific artwork you want; a character may have several printings.
  • Assess condition and authenticity independently of whether the card has “banned” or “censored” in its description.
  • Treat the word “banned” in collector listings as a possible reference to artwork history, not proof of tournament illegality.
