30 FPS vs. 60 FPS in Console Games: What Changes?

A 60 fps mode generally offers smoother motion, while 30 fps modes may prioritize resolution or effects. Compare the game’s actual mode details before choosing.

Choose 60 fps when smoother motion and more responsive-feeling gameplay matter most; choose 30 fps when a game’s Quality or Fidelity mode offers visual improvements you prefer. Those are common tradeoffs, not rules: each game decides what its modes change, and a frame-rate target is not a guarantee that every scene will hold that rate.

What does 30 fps versus 60 fps mean?

Frames per second (fps) describes how many images a game aims to display each second. A 60 fps target is twice the frame count of a 30 fps target, which generally makes movement look smoother and can make controls feel more responsive. How noticeable that difference is varies by player, game, and display.

Frame rate is only one part of control responsiveness. The game’s input handling and the rest of the path from controller to screen also matter; a higher frame-rate target alone does not guarantee lower input latency.

What do Quality, Fidelity, and Performance modes change?

These labels are not universal technical standards. A game might use Performance mode to prioritize a higher frame rate, while Quality or Fidelity prioritizes resolution or visual effects. Depending on the title, the tradeoff may involve ray tracing, reflections, shadows, view distance, or other settings—and some games make different tradeoffs or offer different options on different consoles.

Check the game’s own mode description rather than relying on its label. Look for the frame-rate target, rendering resolution, output resolution, and named effects. “4K output,” for example, does not necessarily mean the game renders every frame at native 4K.

Game and source Mode details What the example shows
Halo: Campaign Evolved (Halo Support) Quality targets 30 fps and prioritizes visual fidelity and resolution; Performance targets 60 fps and prioritizes smoother gameplay and responsiveness. Both use dynamic resolution scaling, which can lower rendering resolution under heavier load and raise it again when load falls. A target does not mean fixed native resolution throughout play.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered (Naughty Dog support, updated January 18, 2024) Fidelity targets 30 fps, favors resolution, and is rendered and output at 4K. Performance targets 60 fps and renders at 1440p; output is upscaled to 4K or set to 1440p depending on the console’s video-output settings. Render resolution and output resolution can differ.
The Elder Scrolls Online (Bethesda) On PS5 and Xbox Series X, Fidelity is native 4K/30 fps with several higher visual settings; Performance is native 1440p/60 fps. On Xbox Series S, Performance is native 1080p/60 fps with some settings reduced. Bethesda notes that reflection behavior in Performance mode may vary in demanding areas. The same game can have different specifications across console models, and demanding areas can affect behavior.
Control Ultimate Edition (505 Games support, modified September 12, 2023) Performance targets 60 fps at a 1440p render resolution with 4K output. Graphics targets 30 fps and includes ray-traced transparency and reflections, also at 1440p render resolution with 4K output. Xbox Series S has a distinct configuration and, according to the article, offers only Performance mode. Visual effects can be a specific part of the tradeoff, and the available modes can differ by console.
The Hinokami Chronicles (SEGA FAQ) PS5 and Xbox Series X players can select a 60 fps setting, but online battles, cut-scenes, mini-games, and parts of battles remain at 30 fps. SEGA also warns of differences at 60 fps. A selected rate may not apply to every type of content.

How to choose between 30 fps and 60 fps

  1. Read the game’s mode descriptions. Find the target rate, resolution details, and effects that change. Check whether a stated resolution is native rendering, upscaled output, or both.
  2. Decide which tradeoff suits you. Try Performance if smoother motion or responsive-feeling controls are your priority. Try Quality or Fidelity if you prefer the specific visual upgrades listed and find that mode’s frame rate acceptable.
  3. Look for qualifications. Words such as “target,” notes about dynamic resolution or demanding areas, and exceptions for cut-scenes or particular activities all affect what to expect.
  4. Compare the same scene in both modes. If the difference is unclear, switch modes and view the same movement or scene rather than judging by the mode names alone.

Does a 60 fps mode require a 120 Hz display?

No. A 120 Hz display is not required just to play at 60 fps. It matters when you want to use a mode above 60 fps, but support depends on the game, console, connection, and display. Xbox’s platform overview discusses 120 Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) as gaming display features; that does not mean every game or screen supports each feature.
