If Apex Legends is closing to the dashboard or freezing on an Xbox Series X or Series S, work through EA’s troubleshooting steps in order. First check whether it is a console/game crash or a connection, account, or server error; those problems need different fixes. No cited official guidance establishes one guaranteed fix for every Apex crash.
First identify what is happening
A crash or freeze means Apex stops responding or closes to the Xbox dashboard. A message about connecting, signing in, linking an account, or reaching servers points instead to a connection, account, or service problem. Note the exact message or error code before changing settings; EA’s Apex Legends error-code guidance treats some of these issues separately from crashes.
Also note when the failure occurs: at launch, during a match, or while returning to the lobby. That detail can help EA or Xbox Support narrow down a persistent problem.
Check EA and Xbox service status
Before reinstalling or changing network settings, check EA’s live server status page for Apex Legends and Xbox. If a service outage or maintenance is listed, wait for it to be resolved and check again. Reinstalling the game will not resolve a server-side outage.

Try the lower-risk console checks
- Update Xbox. Make sure the console has the latest available system software.
- Disconnect USB devices. Unplug devices attached to the console’s USB ports, then test Apex again.
- Restart the console. Close the game and restart Xbox before launching it again.
- Power-cycle Xbox. EA links to Xbox’s current power-cycle instructions. Follow the instructions on that page for your console.
These are general troubleshooting steps, not a confirmed fix for every Series X or Series S crash. EA’s broader crashing and freezing guidance also advises closing background apps.
Reinstall Apex and check its storage location
If the crash continues, reinstall Apex Legends. EA also suggests testing the game from the console’s internal storage if it is currently installed on an external drive. Treat that as a diagnostic check, not a recommendation to buy additional storage or an assurance that storage location is the cause.

Clear the Alternate MAC address
EA’s Xbox troubleshooting route is:
- Open Settings.
- Go to All Settings → Network → Network Settings → Advanced Settings.
- Select Alternate MAC address → Clear.
- Restart the Xbox, then test the game.
Xbox menu names can vary with system software, so use the closest matching labels if they have changed.
Use the right steps for an error code
These error notes apply when the game displays the named error; they do not explain every crash:

- Temporary code 110: EA says this is usually an account issue and recommends restarting.
- Code 429: EA associates this usually with maintenance or downtime. Check live service status before changing console settings.
- “Leaf” error: EA says this indicates the servers are not responding. Check status and follow EA’s connection guidance rather than treating it as proof of a hardware fault.
For other connection or account messages, use EA’s error-code page and follow the instructions for the message shown.
