For a modded Swashbuckler Rogue in Baldur’s Gate 3, a current Patch 8-and-beyond build guide recommends Swashbuckler Rogue 7 / Hexblade Warlock 5. The split aims to pair the subclass’s Sneak Attack opportunities with Hexblade features; it is not a universally proven best build. “Swashbuckler” can also mean a separate modded full class, which uses a different progression and is not covered by this split.
Which Swashbuckler does this build mean?
This recommendation is for the Cunning Strike and UA6 Swashbuckler Rogue subclass implementation, not every mod that uses the Swashbuckler name. Its page describes an optional Rogue subclass and Rogue feature changes, and notes Patch 8 fixes, including one for the subclass not appearing for selection.
A separate Swashbuckler full-class mod adds a standalone class with seven subclasses: Duelist, Blooded, Graceful Fist, Inquisitor, Ruffian, Scoundrel, and Trickster. Its Panache resource and level progression belong to that mod; they should not be mixed into a Rogue-subclass build. Check the chosen mod’s live page and requirements, since the title alone does not specify an implementation or compatibility with your setup.
Recommended split: Swashbuckler Rogue 7 / Hexblade Warlock 5
PC Gamer’s Patch 8-and-beyond build guide recommends Rogue 7 / Hexblade 5 for its Swashbuckler Rogue route. It argues that Flick o’ the Wrist offers an alternative to Extra Attack and becomes available a level earlier, while Swashbuckler makes Sneak Attacks easier to land. The guide also says that staying with Rogue longer can yield 6d6 Sneak Attack per round alongside a Swashbuckler bonus-action attack. Those are the guide’s stated reasons, not results from controlled testing.

Why stop at Rogue 7?
The split keeps more Rogue progression than a more Warlock-heavy combination, supporting the Sneak Attack-focused side of the build. The specific timing and behavior of subclass features depend on the installed implementation, so confirm them against its current description rather than assuming every Swashbuckler mod grants the same features.
What the five Warlock levels contribute
The recommendation pairs those Rogue levels with Hexblade. The cited guide presents this as a way to combine the Rogue subclass’s Sneak Attack advantages with Hexblade’s contribution, but the available description does not establish a complete level-by-level feature route. Check the guide and the mod pages for the exact features and prerequisites in your versions before committing to a progression plan.

How to decide whether this is the best build for you
- Choose Rogue 7 / Hexblade 5 if you want the Rogue-subclass playstyle, have the relevant Swashbuckler Rogue implementation and Hexblade content, and value the guide’s Sneak Attack-focused rationale.
- Choose the full-class mod on its own terms if you want a standalone Swashbuckler class. Its subclasses and Panache progression are distinct; the Rogue 7 / Hexblade 5 recommendation does not establish the best split for that mod.
- Reconsider multiclassing if a specific class milestone or feat timing matters more to you than combining class features. A split can delay or forgo features available by continuing in one class.
No cited source establishes a universal winner across both mods, unmodded BG3, every difficulty, or every party setup. “Best” here means a guide-backed recommendation for one modded Rogue-subclass route.
What multiclassing changes in BG3
Larian’s multiclassing announcement says characters can choose a different class at each level and that BG3 removes tabletop ability-score prerequisites for multiclassing. That flexibility does not make class levels interchangeable: features depend on the level reached in each class.

As PC Gamer’s multiclassing guide explains, feats and ability-score improvements are tied to levels in an individual class, not every four total character levels. It also lists Extra Attack milestones at level 5 for several martial classes, with Blade and Valour Bards and Bladesinging Wizards reaching it at level 6. Those examples show why a multiclass split can trade a class’s later milestones for features from another class; they do not establish that every Swashbuckler implementation uses those same feature rules.

The Rogue-subclass mod page says it changes Rogue level 3 and reactions involving Opportunity Attack, Polearm Master, and War Caster. It warns that other mods affecting those systems can conflict, and records Patch 8-related updates. Read the live page for requirements and compatibility notes, then check your installed mod versions before relying on the subclass being selectable or a particular interaction working.

The full-class mod is a separate implementation with its own mechanics and compatibility notes. The official BG3 modding guide explains that custom classes and subclasses need progression setup; authors add a separate multiclass progression entry to make a custom class available for multiclassing. In practice, custom-class availability depends on the mod and its setup, not on treating it as a standard vanilla Swashbuckler option.
