Guinness World Records identifies Minecraft as the best-selling individual videogame, with more than 350 million units sold according to Mojang, while HP’s 2025 overview estimates 520 million copies for Tetris when sales across its many versions are combined. Those figures describe different counting scopes, so they do not establish a like-for-like winner.
Which game is the best-selling video game of all time?
For a single individual game, Guinness World Records lists Minecraft as the best-selling videogame. Its record listing, updated in April 2025, says Mojang confirmed sales of more than 350 million units. This is a dated reported milestone, not a live 2026 count or an independently audited total. Guinness World Records’ record listing.
Tetris can appear ahead of Minecraft when a ranking adds sales across its many versions. HP’s 2025 overview gives an estimate of 520 million copies across versions, but that is a secondary-source compilation and does not represent sales of one specific release. HP’s overview of best-selling games.
The answer therefore depends on the unit being counted: one individual game, one specific release, or a collection of versions of a game developed and sold over time. A ranking needs to state that rule before its order can be meaningfully compared.

What do the reported sales figures show?
Official publisher figures offer useful comparisons within a publisher’s catalog. Nintendo’s “Million-Seller Nintendo First-Party Titles,” published November 4, 2025, reports worldwide life-to-date sales through September 30, 2025. Its figures include software bundled with hardware or other products, as well as downloadable versions of packaged software.
| Game | Reported units | Scope and date |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | More than 350 million | Mojang-confirmed milestone reported by Guinness World Records; individual videogame; record listing updated April 2025. |
| Tetris | Estimated 520 million copies | HP 2025 overview; sales across versions combined, not one release. |
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | 69.56 million | Nintendo worldwide life-to-date units through September 30, 2025; Nintendo’s software totals include bundled copies and downloadable versions of packaged software. |
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons | 49.91 million | Nintendo worldwide life-to-date units through September 30, 2025; Nintendo’s software totals include bundled copies and downloadable versions of packaged software. |
| Wii Sports | 82.79 million | Nintendo worldwide units through September 30, 2016; Nintendo says its software units include copies bundled with hardware. |
Nintendo’s figures come from its official million-seller software table and its Wii software sales table. The differing snapshot dates matter: these are publisher-reported totals at particular points in time, not synchronized current counts.

Why rankings of best-selling games differ
One game or all its versions?
Adding sales from multiple versions can produce a larger total than counting a single release. The Tetris estimate above uses that broader approach, while Guinness’s Minecraft entry is framed as an individual-videogame record. A ranking that mixes these scopes should label them instead of presenting the numbers as directly comparable.
When was the total reported?
Sales totals are snapshots. For example, Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons numbers cover sales through September 30, 2025; they should not be described as totals through today. The Wii Sports figure is older still, covering sales through September 30, 2016.

Are bundled copies included?
Bundling changes the meaning of a unit total. Nintendo expressly includes software bundled with hardware or other products in its software sales, so its figures are not limited to copies individually purchased as standalone games. A comparison with another publisher’s total is strongest when both sources use comparable bundle rules.
What does “sales” measure?
Unit sales should be compared with unit sales. Players, downloads, installs, revenue and active users measure different things; none should be substituted for copies or units sold without clearly changing the question. If one source reports units shipped to retailers and another reports purchases by consumers, those measures also need to be identified rather than assumed equivalent.

How to judge an all-time sales ranking
Before treating a list as definitive, check four details:
- Counting scope: Does each entry mean one title or release, or combine versions and editions?
- As-of date: When did the publisher or record source report the number?
- Platform coverage: Does the figure cover one platform, several platforms, or a broader collection of releases?
- Bundle treatment: Are copies included when packaged with hardware or another product?
Publisher reports are particularly useful for a publisher’s own titles, but a global ranking requires comparable disclosures from multiple publishers and consistent rules for editions, bundles and sales measures. The figures here illustrate the issue; they do not establish a harmonized current top ten across the industry.
