Astro Bot Rescue Mission Reviews: Is the PS VR Platformer Worth Playing?

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a highly rated PS VR platformer whose 360-degree level design makes looking and leaning part of the gameplay. Here’s what reviews praise, what they criticize, and which hardware you need.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a highly regarded platformer built specifically around the original PlayStation VR: you guide Astro with a DualShock 4 while looking and leaning around the world to find routes and help him. It is worth considering if you have the required PS VR headset and PlayStation Camera; it is not a standard PS4 platformer you can play without them. Sony lists 26 missions and 26 additional challenge stages, and review coverage praises the VR design while noting some camera and pacing frustrations.

Do you need PS VR and a camera to play Astro Bot Rescue Mission?

Yes. Sony identifies Astro Bot Rescue Mission as a PS4 game that requires both a PlayStation VR headset and PlayStation Camera. The DualShock 4 is also part of the experience, serving as the interface for Astro’s in-game gadgets. Sony’s US product listing describes the title as playable on PS5 with the latest system software, while warning that some PS4 features may be absent. That statement does not establish compatibility with PS VR2, so do not treat a PS VR2 headset as a substitute. Sony’s product page has the official hardware and platform details.

What do reviews say about Astro Bot Rescue Mission?

The critical consensus is very positive, particularly about how the game makes the player’s viewpoint part of platforming. In the Metacritic listing captured in 2026, the game had a 90 Metascore from 51 critic reviews and an 8.9 user score from 701 ratings. Those are changing aggregate snapshots, not a claim that every critic or player agrees. Metacritic’s listing includes individual reviews and ratings.

UploadVR reviewer Jamie Feltham praised the responsive controls, the way 360-degree VR creates new platforming angles, optional challenges, and boss encounters. His review also called out limitations: the camera could not move backward, ordinary enemies sometimes felt like cannon fodder, and some boss fights could feel long enough to make a late defeat frustrating. The overall picture is of an inventive VR showcase with occasional friction, rather than a flawless or universally appealing platformer. UploadVR’s review was published October 4, 2018.

How does the VR design change the platforming?

Astro moves through a compact world, but the player is not limited to looking straight ahead at a conventional screen. Sony describes leaning to peer around corners and creating paths for Astro; UploadVR highlights how the full space around the player changes the angles from which platforming challenges can be approached. Looking around can reveal routes or details that are easy to miss from a fixed forward view, making your head movement part of how you read a level.

The controller complements that viewpoint with gadgets used to interact with the environment. This combination—guiding Astro with a traditional controller while physically inspecting the surrounding level—is the core appeal reviewers singled out. It also means the game’s defining feature depends on having the VR hardware, not merely owning the PS4 game.

How much content is there?

Sony lists 26 main missions and 26 additional challenge stages. The challenge content provides optional tests beyond the main mission set; UploadVR praised those stages as a meaningful extension of the game.

Feltham estimated that his campaign took about four hours and reported missing at least one bot in most missions. That is one reviewer’s playthrough, not an official completion-time promise. Searching for missed bots or taking on the challenge stages can add time, but the cited sources do not establish a universal total playtime.

PlayStation VR2 Horizon Call of The Mountain™ Bundle (PSVR2)
  • PlayStation VR2 Sense technology: Eye tracking. Headset feedback. 3D Audio. Highly intuitive controls – Haptic Feedback, Adaptive Triggers and Finger Touch Detection
  • Cutting-edge performance
  • 4K HDR visuals
  • 110º field of view
  • Advanced graphical rendering

What are the main drawbacks to consider?

  • Camera movement is constrained: UploadVR noted that the camera could not move backward, which can limit repositioning in some situations.
  • Some encounters are less memorable: The reviewer found that ordinary enemies could feel weak beside the more inventive platforming and boss fights.
  • Boss pacing can test patience: Some battles ran long, and failing late in one could be frustrating.
  • The hardware requirement is substantial: A PS VR headset and PlayStation Camera are required for the PS4 version; a standard controller and console alone are not enough.

Should you play Astro Bot Rescue Mission?

If you already have the original PS VR setup and enjoy platformers, Astro Bot Rescue Mission is an easy game to consider: its most celebrated ideas rely on VR in a direct, integrated way, and its main missions are supplemented by a separate set of challenge stages. If you do not own the required headset and camera, factor that hardware requirement into the decision rather than assuming the PS5 listing means it works with PS VR2. Sony’s US store displayed the game at $19.99 when checked, but price and availability can vary by region and change over time.
