The key distinction: not everything published on April 1 was a hoax. Some jokes were playable, and some real promotions appeared alongside the pranks.
Fake games and announcements that were only jokes
NieR: COSMIC HORROR
An apparent new NieR project, NieR: COSMIC HORROR, made Gematsu’s April Fools’ compilation. GameSpot later reproduced a clarification from the official NieR account confirming it was an April Fools’ project. That confirmation makes this one of the clearest fake reveals in the roundup. GameSpot’s roundup and Gematsu’s compilation cover the announcement.
PowerWash Simulator: Date the Dirt
GameSpot highlighted a fake dating-sim spin-off in which the personified dirt becomes a romance option. It takes the cleaning premise of PowerWash Simulator and pushes it into an unexpected genre, making the joke legible even before the title’s pun lands. GameSpot describes the gag.
The Witcher: Project R.O.A.C.H.
The supposed horse-shaped controller riffs on Roach, Geralt’s famously dependable horse. It is a fictional product gag, not a peripheral to buy. Both Game Informer and Nintendo Life identify it as a joke.

Pragmata is secretly a Mega Man game
Capcom’s gag suggested that Pragmata was secretly a Mega Man game. It plays on the audience’s familiarity with both franchises rather than announcing a real crossover. GameSpot and Game Informer included the joke in their roundups: GameSpot and Game Informer.
Jokes you could actually play
Minecraft’s Herdcraft Update
Mojang’s Minecraft joke was playable rather than just an announcement. GameSpot describes the Herdcraft Update as removing the conventional inventory and letting players direct the “spirit” of blocks. That change turns a familiar interface into the punchline—and gives players a way to experience the bit firsthand. GameSpot covers the update.
Rank #2
PUBG: Battlegrounds’ Prop Hunt
GameSpot also reports a limited-time PUBG: Battlegrounds Prop Hunt mode. Players were split into Hunters and disguised Props, converting the battle royale’s usual search for opponents into a game of spotting objects that do not belong. This was a playable mode, not a fake standalone game announcement. GameSpot’s coverage describes its teams.
Overwatch’s Underwatch
Blizzard announced a two-week Underwatch mode scheduled to run from April 1 through April 13, 2026. The announcement promised a physics-bending experience: Blizzard’s official event description, quoted by PC Gamer, said, “Physics will follow no rules.” Those dates are the announced schedule; PC Gamer’s March 11 report is a pre-event account, not independent confirmation of later availability. PC Gamer’s report gives the schedule and quote.

Pokopia’s inflatable Sudowoodo
Nintendo Life says Pokopia players could receive an inflatable Sudowoodo as a real limited-time in-game item, available only until 5 a.m. on April 2. “Inflatable” describes the in-game item; it does not mean a physical toy was being offered. Nintendo Life distinguishes this item from the day’s jokes.
Landfall Day updates
Landfall’s April 1 livestream included updates for Haste, Content Warning, and Peak. Game Informer reports that it included console plans for the first two games and a special Peak update. These were real announcements and content, not simply prank reveals. Game Informer’s roundup covers the stream.
For Honor Mirror Mode and a Bugsnax text adventure
Gematsu’s compilation also lists For Honor Mirror Mode as an event scheduled to run through April 2 at 6 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. ET. It also reports that Young Horses announced Rebungered!! That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Bunger as a “real and actual text adventure.” The latter is presented as real, despite its unmistakably comic title. Gematsu’s evolving compilation includes both.

Toriel keychain: real
Nintendo Life says Fangamer’s 3D Toriel keychain was a real product priced at $14. That report establishes the product and its price at the time of coverage; it does not establish current stock or Amazon availability. Nintendo Life identifies it as real.

Sanic shirt: reported as a one-day offer
Gematsu reported that official Sanic T-shirts were available through SEGA Shop for that day only. This is a time-limited offer as reported on April 1, not evidence of current availability. Gematsu included the shirts in its compilation.
Roach controller: fictional
Unlike the Toriel keychain and reported Sanic shirts, Project R.O.A.C.H. was not merchandise for sale. The horse controller belongs in the fake-product category, not a shopping list.
How to tell a prank from a real announcement
April Fools’ roundups gather material with different levels of confirmation. A date alone is not proof that a game, mode, or product is fake: Gematsu’s compilation, for example, includes real events and content as well as gags. Check the claim itself, especially when a joke could be mistaken for a real release or offer.
- Look for an explicit correction or confirmation. The official NieR account clarified that NieR: COSMIC HORROR was an April Fools’ project.
- Check whether players could access it in-game. GameSpot describes Herdcraft and PUBG’s Prop Hunt as playable content, not just mock announcements.
- Separate an in-game item from a physical product. The inflatable Sudowoodo was a limited-time Pokopia item; the Roach controller was a fictional hardware gag.
- Read roundups as collections, not rankings. Gematsu’s page was updated on April 1 and included items such as Rift of the MarlonDancer, Silent Hill 2’s “5ft of James,” Farma Reforger, Owlbrick, a bluer SEGA logo, and a fake LEVEL-5 Land theme park. Game Informer said it gathered 30 gags, including Landfall Day and a 10-hour Mega Starmie jogging stream. Those are each outlet’s selections and counts, not an objective industry-wide ranking.
Taken together, the 2026 roundups show why the label “April Fools’ joke” can cover very different things: a fake reveal, a playable gag, a real event, or an actual product promoted on the same day. The funniest examples were often the ones whose format made the distinction clear—or whose official follow-up settled it.
