In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Rook’s armor class shapes the balance between ability damage and defense, while rarity, workshop upgrades, and enchantments improve armor through separate systems. Companions use their own armor, which works differently: it has no defense stat. Here’s how to choose and improve gear without confusing combat stats with appearance or edition cosmetics.
How Rook’s armor classes work
Rook can equip light, medium, or heavy armor. The class trade-off is between ability damage and defense: light armor offers the greatest ability-damage boost, while heavy armor offers the greater defense boost. Medium armor sits between those options. The Dragon Age Wiki’s armor reference also notes that some passive bonuses require Rook’s armor and headgear to be the same class; this is a build-specific condition, not a universal rule for all passives.
When comparing pieces, consider their class alongside their individual effects. A class preference alone does not determine whether an item suits a build.
How to improve Rook’s armor
Armor progression uses three distinct mechanics: duplicate copies can raise rarity, the Caretaker’s workshop can raise an item’s numeric upgrade level, and enchantments add another customization option. These systems do not apply identically to every item.

Raise rarity with duplicate copies
Finding another copy of an existing armor piece raises that piece’s rarity by one tier. The increase unlocks an additional effect and raises defense and ability damage. Rarity is not the same as the item’s workshop upgrade level.
Upgrade equipment at the Caretaker’s workshop
The workshop raises an item’s displayed numeric level, shown as a value such as +2. The reference lists +10 as the maximum. Newly acquired armor and armor whose rarity increases are brought up to the Caretaker’s current rank, so that rank affects their starting upgrade level.

Apply enchantments
Enchantments are also handled at the Caretaker’s workshop, but require story progress and a sufficient Caretaker rank. The reference identifies rank 3 as the threshold; it does not establish the exact story moment when the feature unlocks.
Know the exception for unique armor
According to the armor reference, unique armor cannot gain rarity increases or workshop upgrades, but it can still be enchanted. Because item-specific behavior may be affected by updates, check a current item reference before planning around a named unique piece.

How companion armor differs
Each companion has their own armor choices. Rook cannot equip companion armor, and companions cannot equip Rook’s armor. Companion armor has no defense stat because companions do not take combat damage. Although companion pieces are also described using armor-class categories, those classes do not map to ability damage the way Rook’s armor classes do. The companion armor reference describes options and acquisition routes, but exact pieces and conditions should be checked for the specific companion.
Companion armor may be obtained through companion progression, quests, faction shops, and chests. Available options can also depend on a companion’s Hero of the Veilguard outcome. Those broad routes do not establish the location or requirement for any particular piece.

Changing armor appearance
Armor appearances let you change how armor looks without changing its statistics. Treat appearance selection as cosmetic customization, separate from choosing equipment for its class, effects, rarity, or upgrade level.

EA describes cosmetic armor rewards for Rook and companions as part of the Deluxe Edition. These are appearance rewards, not a separate armor-progression system or a reason to assume different combat stats.
