To use HDMI, connect the PS5 to a capture card’s HDMI input and connect the card to the laptop over USB. If you just want to play on the laptop screen without capture hardware, use Sony’s PS Remote Play app instead.
Why a direct HDMI cable usually does not work
The PS5’s HDMI port sends video to a display, and most laptop HDMI ports also send video out. A cable between them therefore connects two outputs rather than giving the laptop a video input. Microsoft Q&A guidance describes this as the usual arrangement; check the specifications for your exact laptop model for exceptions: Microsoft Q&A.
Option 1: Use a capture card as the HDMI input
A capture card with HDMI input provides the physical connection a typical laptop lacks. The PS5 sends video to the card, and the card sends captured video to the laptop over USB. Use this route if you need a direct HDMI connection or want to record or stream through compatible software.
Connect an Elgato HD60 X
- Connect the PS5 directly to a TV or monitor first, so you can change its settings.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System and turn off Enable HDCP if you intend to capture gameplay. Elgato says HDCP-protected signals cannot be captured with the HD60 X; disabling HDCP may affect access to protected video apps or content.
- Connect the PS5’s HDMI output to the HD60 X’s HDMI input.
- Optional: connect the HD60 X’s HDMI output to a TV or monitor for passthrough viewing.
- Connect the HD60 X to the laptop using USB.
- Open OBS Studio or Elgato 4K Capture Utility and select the capture device.
These steps are specific to Elgato’s documented PS5 setup; other capture cards may use different ports, software, or settings. See Elgato’s PS5 setup guide for HD60 X.

Understand capture resolution versus passthrough
For the HD60 X specifically, Elgato lists HDMI passthrough up to 2160p60, 1440p120, or 1080p240. Its listed capture formats include 2160p30, 1440p60, and 1080p60 HDR; HDR capture is listed as available on Windows only. Passthrough is the signal sent onward to a separate display, not the resolution the laptop necessarily receives as captured video. The device uses USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) Type-C and HDMI 2.0 input. These are HD60 X specifications, not general capture-card capabilities: Elgato HD60 X specifications.
Option 2: Play through PS Remote Play
PS Remote Play streams the console to a Windows laptop over a network, so it does not use the laptop’s HDMI port or require an HDMI capture card. Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download as a baseline, and at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance; these are recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular connection experience.

Check Sony’s Windows requirements
Sony’s listed requirements include Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11, a 7th-generation Intel Core processor or later, at least 2 GB RAM, 100 MB of storage, a display resolution of 1024 × 768 or higher, a sound card, and a USB port. You also need a PS5, a PlayStation account matching the one used on the console, a controller connected to the Windows PC by USB, and a high-speed internet connection. Check Sony’s current guidance for any changes: PS Remote Play for Windows.
Set up Remote Play
- On the PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and enable Remote Play.
- Install and open the PS Remote Play app on the Windows laptop.
- Connect a controller to the laptop with USB.
- Sign in to the app with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5, then select the console.
Which method should you choose?
| What you need | Capture card | PS Remote Play |
|---|---|---|
| Physical HDMI connection to the laptop | Yes, through the card’s HDMI input and USB connection to the laptop | No; it streams over a network |
| Extra hardware | Capture card and its required cables | No capture card; controller connects to the Windows PC by USB |
| Recording or streaming | Can feed compatible capture software such as OBS Studio; capabilities depend on the card | Not established by Sony’s cited Windows setup guidance |
| Separate TV or monitor | Possible if the card has HDMI passthrough | Not part of the HDMI connection path |
| Important limitation | HDCP-protected signals cannot be captured on the HD60 X | Performance depends on a network connection; Sony publishes speed recommendations |
If your goal is specifically HDMI input, choose a capture card and verify its HDMI input, USB connection, supported capture formats, software compatibility, and any HDCP restrictions. If you only want to play on the laptop and meet Sony’s requirements, Remote Play avoids capture hardware.
