The best all-purpose story build for Ramza in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is to use his character-specific Squire/Gallant Knight job as a flexible base, then equip a secondary ability group that fills the encounter’s biggest need. It is a practical default, not a proven best-in-slot setup: learned abilities remain usable after changing jobs, so Ramza’s role and skill loadout can change with your party and the map.
Recommended all-purpose Ramza build
Start with Ramza’s character-specific Squire line. Use its built-in skills when they suit the fight, and choose a secondary ability group for what the team needs—damage, support, or utility. Adjust mobility and durability to the map and difficulty rather than treating one loadout as optimal everywhere.
That flexibility is central to the job system: Square Enix says that once learned, abilities can be used after changing to another job (official game site). The publisher describes more than 20 jobs and over 300 character abilities, a breadth that favors adapting combinations over chasing one universal build (Square Enix announcement, June 4, 2025).
Why the chapter and version matter
The Ivalice Chronicles includes Enhanced and Classic versions. Enhanced adds voice acting, overhauled graphics, and an updated interface; Classic recreates the 1997 game with the War of the Lions translation, according to Square Enix’s announcement. Older guides may reflect different versions or system assumptions, so check that a job value or unlock detail applies to the version you are playing.

Chapter 4: Gallant Knight as a strong default
In Chapter 4, Ramza’s character-specific job is Gallant Knight. A version-specific community differences guide by metroidcomposite reports its multipliers as MP 110, PA 115, and MA 115, and says these are higher than those of his earlier Squire variants (GameFAQs guide, version 1.14, updated December 7, 2025). That makes Gallant Knight a sound base for a broad story build, but these guide-reported figures do not prove it beats every alternative in every encounter.
Choose the secondary abilities for the job at hand
Because learned abilities carry across job changes, treat the secondary set as a way to cover a gap rather than as a permanent identity. Use these role-based choices as a framework; the available evidence does not establish a ranked list of exact skill packages.

| What the encounter needs | How to tune Ramza |
|---|---|
| More damage | Choose a secondary ability group that adds the kind of offense your party is missing. |
| Support | Give Ramza abilities that help cover the party’s support needs for that fight. |
| Utility or mobility | Favor options that address the map’s movement or tactical demands. |
| Greater staying power | Prioritize an ability set and job configuration that better suit the fight’s durability demands. |
These are encounter-driven recommendations, not claims that a particular combination has been tested or out-damages other builds. The game’s broad job and ability system supports experimentation; it does not prescribe a best Ramza loadout.
Progress through jobs without overcommitting
A GameFAQs guide to The Ivalice Chronicles differences reports that the game uses War of the Lions job-unlock values. It also reports a 30% increase in JP earned from a unit’s own actions; according to the guide, the bonus stacks with JP Boost/Gained JP Up but does not apply to spillover JP or proposition rewards (metroidcomposite’s version 1.14 guide). These are community guide details, not figures attributed here to an official manual.

For build planning, the practical takeaway is to develop abilities that broaden Ramza’s options, then change his secondary set as your party and progression evolve. Do not assume that a job-unlock number from an older PS1 guide applies unchanged to The Ivalice Chronicles.

There is no source-supported universal best build or best-in-slot equipment list for Ramza. The useful default is his Squire/Gallant Knight base with a secondary skillset chosen for the current encounter; in Chapter 4, Gallant Knight has guide-reported improved multipliers over his earlier Squire variants. Beyond that, the right setup depends on chapter, progression, party role, map, and difficulty.
