These results are useful reference points, not a combined or definitive ranking. Each reflects a different selector and award scope.

Why the awards picked different games
The awards do not measure the same thing. The Game Developers Choice Awards identifies its honor as a developer choice; PlayStation Blog reports the outcome of a player vote; PC Gamer describes an editorial nomination and discussion process; and CESA publishes its Japan Game Awards results. The Game Awards’ rewind, in turn, records its own overall and category winners. A win tells you what that particular group or institution selected—not that all players or critics reached the same verdict.
PlayStation’s reported total of over 1.6 million votes is substantial participation in its poll, but the scope matters: the votes were cast globally across 19 PlayStation award categories. It should not be read as a representative survey of all gamers or as a head-to-head vote across every 2024 release.

How to choose a 2024 game to play
Start with the kind of judgment you trust
- Want a major award’s overall winner? Start with Astro Bot, the Game Awards 2024 Game of the Year.
- Want a developer-selected winner? The Game Developers Choice Awards named Baldur’s Gate 3 its 2024 Game of the Year.
- Want an editorial pick? PC Gamer’s 2024 Game of the Year was Balatro.
- Want a player-vote result? Browse PlayStation Blog’s category winners, keeping in mind that the poll is PlayStation-focused.
- Want a Japan Game Awards winner? CESA’s Grand Award went to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Check platform before settling on a winner
Platform availability can decide the choice more quickly than award status. CESA lists Tears of the Kingdom for Nintendo Switch; its award table also names platforms such as PS5, PS4, Xbox and Steam for other titles. Check the game’s current official product listing for your region and the specific edition before buying: the award table establishes the listed platform, not current store availability, price or edition details.
Match the pick to your preferences
These awards alone do not establish which game best suits your preferred genre, story, challenge level, social play, accessibility needs or available time. Use the winners as a shortlist, then check an official game page and a detailed review for the features that matter to you. The award labels above identify who chose each title; they are not substitutes for comparing how you want to play.
