The visual overhaul is more than a change of scenery: shared units were redesigned and renamed to suit classical antiquity, with Knights becoming Lancers. These models are part of the Chronicles expansion, not a change to every asset in the base game.
What changed in the visual overhaul?
The announced totals are 55 new land-unit models, 19 new naval-unit models and 85 new building models. They describe the expansion’s graphical models; they are not a count of every asset changed across Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, nor do they establish that every unit has a unique model. Age of Empires’ October 15, 2024 announcement gives the totals.
The reason for the rework is the setting. As CaptureAge narrative lead Dr. Ben Angell put it in the team’s November 1, 2024 visual-overhaul feature: “We needed to completely overhaul the look of the game to make it appropriate for classical antiquity.”
How were units redesigned and renamed?
Shared units were remodeled and renamed to make them fit the ancient setting. The clearest named example is the Knight, which became a Lancer. The team also says naval combat was fully overhauled. Its explanation does not provide a complete unit-by-unit list of renamed or redesigned units, so the Knight-to-Lancer change should not be taken to mean every unit was renamed.

Examples of distinctive designs
The official feature points to Achaemenid Immortals and Hoplites fielded by the Greek civilizations as examples of specific designs. It also identifies 13 campaign-only units, including Cretan Archers, Scythian Axe Cavalry and Rhodian Slingers. These examples show that the visual treatment covers both civilization-linked forces and units reserved for campaign scenarios.
Why the designs are not tied to one precise date
Chronicles spans a broad geographic and temporal range, so its art direction had to serve its civilizations and the campaign rather than reconstruct every unit for one narrowly defined battle. The developers note, for example, that Achaemenid large warships draw visual inspiration from Hellenistic and Roman eras. That is a deliberate design choice, not evidence that each model represents an exact historical vessel from a single moment.

How the overhaul fits into Battle for Greece
Chronicles: Battle for Greece launched on November 14, 2024. It adds a 21-scenario campaign spanning over a century and introduces the Achaemenids, Athenians and Spartans. Those three civilizations are not available in ranked play, as the publisher states in its launch announcement and FAQ. The visual overhaul belongs to this narrative expansion; the announced counts should not be read as a general update to the base game.
