There isn’t one best Maelle build for every point in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. For the main story, use Medalum with a Burn-to-Virtuose rotation; once you have the endgame gear and party support, Esquium can power a dedicated Burn-stack setup. In both cases, prioritize the weapon’s scaling and a reliable way to enter Virtuose over copying a fixed attribute spread.
The build recommendations below are from third-party guides, not controlled damage tests or developer-confirmed rankings. GamerHeadlines says it checked its advice against patch notes through v1.5.6 on August 31, 2026; that does not establish whether a later patch has appeared.

Choose a build for your stage of the game
| Build | Best fit | Core approach | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Progression Burn/Virtuose | Story progression and a practical all-purpose damage setup | Use Burn setup, enter Virtuose with Swift Stride, then spend damage with Percee. Use Mezzo Forte when you need to maintain your stance and recover AP. | Medalum and a teammate who can help apply Burn or Mark. This is the more accessible of the two sourced templates. |
| Late-game Burn stack | Endgame gear and a party built around setup and buffs | Build Burn stacks, then use Burning Canvas as the payoff; keep Swift Stride available as stance insurance. | Esquium, Burn support from Verso, and buffs and turn-economy support from Sciel. It takes setup and is not a universal starter build. |
Progression: Medalum and Virtuose
Use Medalum and follow its attribute scaling rather than carrying over a stat allocation from another weapon. The GamerHeadlines progression template prioritizes Agility and Defense as supporting attributes. Its suggested Pictos include Burning Shots and Marking Shots to help establish the conditions Maelle can exploit.
In combat, apply Burn when the opportunity is available, use Swift Stride against a burning target to reach Virtuose, and follow with Percee for practical damage. If you are already in the stance you want or need AP, Mezzo Forte can help maintain the current stance while restoring AP. This is a flexible rotation, not a requirement to use every move in a fixed order.

Late game: Esquium and Burn payoff
For a more specialized endgame plan, GamerHeadlines recommends Esquium with Burning Canvas as the payoff and Swift Stride as a fallback way to secure Virtuose. Its attribute order is Agility, Defense, then Might, following Esquium’s scaling. Verso supplies Burn, while Sciel helps with buffs and turn economy.
This setup asks the party to create and preserve its conditions before Maelle cashes them in. If enemies interrupt the setup, resist Burn, or force you to spend turns on survival, the progression template may be more dependable for that encounter.
Build around Maelle’s stances
Maelle begins combat Stanceless, according to Gamer Guides. Certain skills move her between stances, her base attacks can switch between Offensive and Defensive, and some weapons can start her in a stance. Virtuose is usually the damage target, but the route into it and the cost of staying there should shape the build.

| Stance | Reported effect | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Offensive | +50% damage dealt and +50% damage received | Use when you can capitalize on the damage increase without exposing Maelle to a dangerous hit. |
| Defensive | -50% damage received; successful parries or dodges restore 1 AP | Useful when you need to survive or can reliably turn enemy actions into AP. |
| Virtuose | +200% damage dealt | Maelle’s major damage stance; plan an entry skill and a payoff that fits the opening. |
These stance modifiers are figures reported by Gamer Guides’ Maelle guide. They are game-mechanics claims from that guide, not independently tested performance measurements.

Choose skills by job, not by checklist
- Enter or recover Virtuose: Swift Stride can provide an early route against a burning target. Gustave’s Homage is an eight-hit attack that places Maelle in Virtuose, according to Gamer Guides.
- Spend the stance on damage: Sword Ballet is a five-hit Virtuose payoff. Combustion is an option for exploiting Burn stacks; Stendhal is a late-game single-hit choice.
- Manage stance and AP: Mezzo Forte helps maintain the current stance and recover AP.
- Handle shields: Breaking Rules removes enemy shields and returns AP per shield, making it a utility pick rather than a default damage move.
These skills serve different stages and situations. Select the moves that complete your rotation, answer the enemy’s defenses, and leave room for survival or AP needs; trying to equip every highlighted option does not produce a coherent loadout.
Set attributes, Pictos, and Luminas around the weapon
Start with the weapon’s listed scaling, then allocate attributes to support the rotation and keep Maelle alive. GamerHeadlines’ builds place Agility first among supporting priorities and include Defense; the Esquium endgame version adds Might after those. Do not treat those priorities as a universal stat sheet: changing weapons changes the reason for investing in particular attributes.

- Engaging Storyline: Dive into a rich, narrative-driven adventure with unexpected twists.
- Complex Puzzles: Test your problem-solving skills with challenging puzzles.
- Immersive World: Explore a visually stunning alien planet with breathtaking details and treacherous terrain.
For the progression template, Burning Shots and Marking Shots are suggested setup Pictos. The cited recommendations do not establish one fixed Lumina list that is best across both builds, so choose Luminas to fill the needs your weapon and party leave open: reliable AP, damage setup, or survivability. If missed parries or dodges regularly end attempts, retain a defensive fallback instead of spending every choice on damage.
Pick weapons and variants for the job
Medalum anchors the progression recommendation; the Gamer Guides weapon discussion says it is obtained through a Maelle duel with Golgra. Tissenum is described there as a high-damage option tied to the optional Sirène dungeon and later Act II. Barrier Breaker has a shield-focused niche. These are options with different access and roles, not a universal ranking.
FinalBoss.io also describes Burn, critical-hit Burn, self-sufficient, counter, and Stendhal one-shot variants. It associates Brulerum with crit-Burn, Melarum or Glaisum with self-sufficiency, and Jarum with counter play. Consider those alternatives when you have the relevant gear and prefer their play pattern; the guide does not establish that any one outperforms the others for all players.

Choose party support for the build
A forgiving progression template
GamerHeadlines recommends Lune, Verso, and Maelle for progression. In that template, Lune can generate Stains, apply Burn, and carry recovery; Verso provides Mark and Rank-C utility; Maelle turns the setup into burst. Adapt the arrangement if an enemy resists the setup or you need more healing.
A specialized endgame Burn team
For its Burn-focused Maelle plan, GamerHeadlines pairs Verso, Sciel, and Maelle. Verso helps apply Burn and Sciel contributes buffs and turn economy. This is most useful when the encounter gives the team time to establish its conditions; if setup is repeatedly interrupted, use a more self-sufficient plan.
Patch freshness and what the guides establish
GamerHeadlines says it checked its builds on August 31, 2026 against official patch notes v1.5.0 through v1.5.6 and identifies v1.5.6 as the newest numbered announcement it found at that time. FinalBoss.io says its guide was updated August 12, 2026 and checked against patch 1.5.6 as of June 30, 2026. Those dates do not establish that no later patch was released.

GamerHeadlines cautions against relying on old advice about Burn after Stun: it reports that v1.5.6 corrected a bug that could let a stunned enemy act immediately after Burn was applied. For details, consult the official Steam patch announcement.
The cited guides provide practical build paths and mechanics, but not controlled comparisons, quantified performance rankings, or a universally optimal attribute allocation. Treat their loadouts as starting points and adjust for your weapon, party, enemy, and execution comfort.
