Age of Mythology: Retold is a modern edition of the myth-themed real-time strategy game, launched September 4, 2024. Its current official platform list includes PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming and PS5, with cross-play available across platforms. It has grown beyond its launch lineup: the base game features Greek, Norse, Egyptian and Atlantean pantheons, while later expansions add Chinese and Japanese mythological content. Those facts make it a substantial package on paper; they do not, by themselves, establish how well its campaign, controls or multiplayer hold up in practice.
What is Age of Mythology: Retold?
Age of Mythology: Retold is a real-time strategy game in which players build an economy, raise armies and draw on mythological forces. The Steam listing describes a 50-mission campaign spanning stories set around Troy, Midgard and Egypt, alongside solo play, online PvP, online co-op and a level editor. It also lists Arena of the Gods, a mode of 35 mythic skirmishes playable solo or cooperatively. What content is included today?
Base-game pantheons
The base game centers on four pantheons: Greek, Norse, Egyptian and Atlantean. Steam lists Immortal Pillars as an expansion adding Chinese mythology. World’s Edge announced that expansion for March 4, 2025, alongside the PS5 release, and said updates from that date onward would arrive simultaneously across Steam, Windows Store, Xbox and PS5. The announcement gives the launch details.
Heavenly Spear and Gauntlet
Heavenly Spear became available September 30, 2025. World’s Edge says it adds Japanese mythology through 12 gods, 12 myth units and a 12-mission campaign. The same announcement says Gauntlet, a solo or co-op mode, became available to all game owners and was beta content that could change or be rebalanced at the time. Which platforms support the game, and is there cross-play?
The official support FAQ lists PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming and PS5, and confirms cross-play across platforms. It also confirms mouse-and-keyboard support on Xbox Series X|S and PS5. The FAQ establishes that these input options are supported, not how comfortable or precise they feel in play. The Scenario Editor is available on PC; Steam also lists a level editor. What is in the Premium Edition?
Steam’s Premium Edition listing includes the base game, Freyr god pack, Legacy Deity Portrait Pack, Immortal Pillars, Heavenly Spear and an exclusive Tsukuyomi portrait. Steam also lists expansions, cosmetic packs, the soundtrack and an Expansion Pass separately. Edition contents and availability may differ or change by platform, region and date, so compare the current listing for the store where you plan to buy. At the time accessed in 2026, Steam showed 90% positive English-language user reviews from 10,444 reviews and 92% positive recent reviews from 164 reviews. The published feature set gives solo players a campaign and Arena of the Gods, while multiplayer players have online PvP, co-op and cross-play. The additional pantheons and campaigns broaden the available mythology beyond the four in the base game. But feature counts and platform support cannot answer whether the campaign is compelling, the controls are approachable, matches are balanced or Premium is good value at your local price. Those questions require hands-on play or attributed independent reviews; no such assessment is established by the sources cited here.

Choose your platform first, especially if you want the PC-only Scenario Editor. Then compare Standard and Premium on that platform’s store and check which expansions you actually want. For multiplayer, the official FAQ confirms cross-play availability, but it does not establish matchmaking quality or current balance.
