There is no reliable, public leaderboard that compares the full player populations of major MMOs across PC launchers, consoles, and regions. For 2025, the most defensible shortlist is World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, Old School RuneScape, Guild Wars 2, and The Elder Scrolls Online—not a precise ranking. The available figures measure different things: Old School RuneScape had a reported event-driven concurrent-player record, while Final Fantasy XIV has trackable Steam-only monthly averages. Use those as signs of activity, not as directly comparable totals.
What “most popular MMO” means in 2025
Player population can mean concurrent players online at one moment, a monthly average of concurrent players, daily active users, or subscribers. Those measures are not interchangeable. A game’s Steam count also leaves out players using other PC launchers or consoles, where applicable.
Steam’s Most Played chart is a live snapshot of people playing through Steam, not a census of every MMO. SteamDB likewise reports Steam concurrent players; its charts update every five or ten minutes depending on a game’s rank. A SteamDB value should be treated as a dated snapshot, not the game’s total population. See SteamDB.
That limitation is why the games below are a practical shortlist of established MMOs with reasons to choose them, rather than a numbered top five. A 2025 Reddit participant summed up the problem by noting that exact counts are generally visible only for Western games exclusive to Steam or games that publicly display counts, such as Old School RuneScape. That is a community observation, not an audited industry finding.

Best MMOs to consider for an active player base
Old School RuneScape: the clearest reported peak
Old School RuneScape has the most striking population figure in this group: GamesRadar reported an all-time concurrent-player record of 240,000 in August 2025, following a major update. That is an event peak, not a typical daily count, and it does not establish that the game has the largest ordinary population of any MMO.
Choose it if you want a long-running sandbox built around player-directed progression and a persistent world. The record is evidence of a major burst of activity; it cannot tell you how busy a particular world, activity, or time of day will be.

Final Fantasy XIV: a story-led MMO with a trackable Steam series
Final Fantasy XIV is a strong fit for players who want a story-focused MMO. SteamCharts lists monthly averages of 14,096.28 concurrent Steam players in October 2025 and 16,767.01 in December 2025. These are Steam-only monthly averages, not subscriber totals, daily active users, or the game’s full population. The figures are available in the SteamCharts history for Final Fantasy XIV Online.
The Steam series lets readers compare activity on that client over time, but it cannot establish the total number of people playing through other PC services or platforms. The increase between those two monthly averages should not be read as a complete measure of the game’s overall growth.

World of Warcraft: an established choice without a comparable figure here
World of Warcraft belongs on a shortlist of established MMOs, but a comparable 2025 population figure was not verified for this article. That means there is no defensible number or rank to attach to it here. Consider it for its long-running MMO format and community, rather than treating an unsupported population estimate as proof of where it stands against the other games.
Guild Wars 2: exploration without a population ranking
Guild Wars 2 is an exploration-oriented recommendation in TechRadar’s 2025 MMO roundup. The available evidence does not establish a comparable total player count for it, so its inclusion is about play style, not a claim that it is more or less populated than the others. It may suit you if exploring and discovering activities matter more than following a population leaderboard.

The Elder Scrolls Online: another exploration-oriented option
The Elder Scrolls Online is also identified as an exploration-friendly choice in TechRadar’s 2025 recommendations. No comparable total population figure is established here. Choose it on the basis of its exploration-focused appeal, not an assumed position in a cross-game player count.

| Game | What the available figure measures | Date and value | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old School RuneScape | Reported all-time concurrent-player record after a major update | 240,000; August 2025 | Typical concurrent activity, daily active users, or a ranking against other games’ averages |
| Final Fantasy XIV Online | Average concurrent players on Steam | 14,096.28; October 2025 | Total players across all clients and platforms, subscribers, or daily active users |
| Final Fantasy XIV Online | Average concurrent players on Steam | 16,767.01; December 2025 | Total players across all clients and platforms, subscribers, or daily active users |
| World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, The Elder Scrolls Online | Comparable 2025 total population figure | Not stated; the available sources do not establish one | A precise population rank against the games above |
The OSRS record and FFXIV monthly Steam averages should not be directly ranked: one is an all-time peak, while the others are monthly averages limited to one client. Third-party population dashboards may also infer activity from signals such as Steam, Reddit, or Twitch; those proxies are not equivalent to concurrent players, daily active users, or subscriptions unless the method and metric are clear.

Choose by the kind of community you want
Population matters most when you need other players for a particular activity, but a large headline number does not guarantee that your preferred content, region, world, or playtime will feel busy. Think about the kind of interaction you actually want:
- Story and characters: Final Fantasy XIV is the story-led choice among these recommendations.
- Exploration: Guild Wars 2 and The Elder Scrolls Online are the exploration-oriented options.
- Sandbox agency: TechRadar’s roundup describes EVE Online and RuneScape as games that let players act on their own terms. These are alternatives if freedom and player-directed play matter more to you than a population ranking.
- Groups, guilds, or a persistent economy: Check whether the specific activities you want are active at your usual playtime. Public figures here do not confirm how many players are available for any one activity.
As GamesRadar quoted Jagex design director Kieren “Mod Kieren” Charles saying, “I believe an MMO is greater than the sum of its parts”; he pointed to diversity of content and play patterns as key. That is a useful design perspective, not a population measurement: a community’s breadth of ways to play can matter as much as its headline size.
