What did reviewers think of Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition?
Metacritic’s PC critic listing records a 75/100 Metascore from 48 reviews, categorized as “Generally Favorable.” In the captured listing, 28 reviews were positive, 20 mixed, and none negative. Those figures summarize critics’ 2020 reviews; they are not a measure of current player satisfaction or a review of later expansions. Metacritic’s critic listing also reproduces Windows Central’s October 14, 2020 assessment that the changes brought the game “to a new level.”
The broad takeaway is a favorable but not unanimous reception. The remaster’s scope and updated presentation were recognized, while the smaller campaign offering stood out as a limitation for at least one reviewer.
Is Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition worth it?
It is a reasonable choice if you want a refreshed version of Age of Empires III with its own civilization and Home City card-deck systems, plus multiplayer, challenge missions, and historical scenarios. The game is not merely a sharper-looking copy: the publisher describes changes to gameplay balance, maps, cards, interface options, and other systems, alongside visual and audio upgrades.

It is less compelling if your main priority is the broadest campaign experience in the series. In its October 2020 review, PC Gamer compared the releases then available and counted 27 campaigns for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition against eight for Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, or twelve when campaign acts were counted separately. That was a launch-period comparison including the base game and two expansions available at that time—not a count of every mode or later add-on now available. PC Gamer’s 2020 review
For a current purchase, separate the critical consensus from the content that arrived afterward: later additions expanded the game, but they do not change what critics reviewed in 2020. Check the live storefront for the edition or bundle you intend to buy, since current prices and bundles vary by region and date.

What does the Definitive Edition add?
World’s Edge says the remaster involved more than 133,000 individual changes and additions. That is the studio’s own count, not an independent performance or quality measurement. The original product description presents 14 civilizations plus the Swedes and Inca, along with earlier expansions, Historical Battles, Art of War Challenge Missions, cross-network multiplayer, spectator mode, and mod support. Steam’s current description instead says the roster has grown to 18 with the addition of the Swedes, Inca, Mexico, and the United States. Later expansions and added civilizations
Content released after the 2020 reviews includes Mexico, the United States, The African Royals, Knights of the Mediterranean, and The Baltic Powers. The official site describes Knights of the Mediterranean as adding Italy and Malta, a Tycoon mode, and Historical Maps. These additions broaden the current game, but the available evidence does not establish a new critic consensus for The Baltic Powers. The 75 Metascore remains a snapshot of the 2020 review cycle.

How does it play, and who is it for?
The official feature set points to a strategy game built around choosing a civilization and managing a Home City shipment-card deck, as well as familiar real-time strategy decisions. Art of War challenges provide a structured way to learn or practice, while Historical Battles offer scenarios beyond the main campaigns. Multiplayer supports cross-network play, and the game includes spectator features and mod support. These are published feature claims, not a guarantee about current matchmaking quality, player numbers, balance, or service availability.
The publisher also says the team made changes to Native American civilizations to represent them with greater care. That is Microsoft’s description of its approach; it should not be mistaken for an independent assessment of historical accuracy. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement

Is it better than the original Age of Empires III?
The Definitive Edition is the updated edition to choose if you want the publisher’s remaster work and the expanded feature set described above. It released on October 15, 2020, for Windows 10 and Steam, and Microsoft announced Game Pass availability at launch. The 2007 original and the Definitive Edition also have different service statuses. Age of Empires Support says multiplayer services for the original ended on October 30, 2024, while the Definitive Edition continues to be supported.
