But “best” depends on what you want: Rise of the Ronin emphasizes combat and player choice, Ghost of Yōtei blends samurai-film spectacle with shinobi techniques, and two other picks offer different takes on historical action.
Best all-around samurai adventure: Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut
For a broad, cinematic samurai experience, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut combines an open world with katana combat, archery, stealth, and a story centered on defending Tsushima. The Director’s Cut includes the Iki Island expansion and Legends, an online co-op mode. Sony’s US store lists a PS5 disc edition.
The PS5 version’s listed features include dynamic 4K resolution targeting 60fps on a compatible display, DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive trigger resistance, 3D Audio, and Japanese voice lip sync. These are Sony’s stated features, not a comparative performance test against the other games here.
Best if combat and player choice come first: Rise of the Ronin
Rise of the Ronin is an open-world action RPG set in 19th-century Japan. Its masterless-samurai premise supports a story shaped by consequential choices, while its combat draws on close-quarters weapons and period firearms. It offers three difficulty modes, so it is the clearest fit on this list if you want to adjust the challenge or prioritize combat variety.

Ghost of Yōtei is described by PlayStation as a cinematic, samurai-film-like experience that also includes stealth and shinobi techniques. Its lead character, Atsu, is described as a mercenary, rather than strictly as a samurai or ninja. Sucker Punch Productions is the developer and Sony Interactive Entertainment is the publisher.
