The Marvel Rivals Closed Alpha ran May 10–20, 2024, and an ability showcase published on its opening day identifies 19 playable characters. However, the searchable source material does not provide a reliable written breakdown of each character’s alpha abilities. This guide names the roster and explains what can—and cannot—be verified about their abilities without confusing the May 2024 build with later versions.
Which characters were in the Marvel Rivals Closed Alpha?
A May 10, 2024 video showcase describes its coverage as including all 19 characters’ abilities and ultimates. Its description names:

The list comes from the showcase’s description, rather than an official character-by-character roster document. NetEase and Marvel Games’ announcement described the alpha as featuring “more than a dozen” playable heroes and villains. Read the March 27, 2024 announcement or view the May 10 showcase.
What were the characters’ alpha abilities?
The available written sources do not substantiate the names or mechanics of each character’s individual alpha abilities. The showcase is a visual reference, but its indexed description alone cannot verify which moves each character used or how those moves worked. For an exact character-by-character account, the May 2024 footage itself needs to be checked; details from later versions should not be presented as alpha facts.

Marvel’s official FAQ explicitly cautioned: “Please bear in mind that our game is still in the Closed Alpha development phase, so all footage does not represent final gameplay.” That warning matters when consulting any footage or descriptions alongside later material: abilities and gameplay could change as development continued. When did the Closed Alpha take place?
Marvel’s official FAQ says the test began May 10, 2024, at 5:00 PM PDT and ended May 20, 2024, at 11:59 PM PDT. The official April 26 update described its goals as refining modes, enhancing gameplay, and validating technical details. Its announced modes were Convoy, Domination, and Convergence; its listed maps were Yggsgard: Yggdrasill Path, Yggsgard: Royal Palace, and Tokyo 2099: Shin-Shibuya. See the April 26 alpha update.

Why alpha abilities may differ from later Marvel Rivals versions
The May test was explicitly an in-development alpha, not a final representation of gameplay. In a June 20 developer update about the move toward beta, the developers discussed Venom and Adam Warlock as upcoming beta additions and said Team-Up abilities were in development. Those later plans are useful context, but they do not establish what was playable or how abilities worked in the May alpha. Read the June developer update.
