A sensible 4-3-3 (4), also called 4-3-3 Attack, starts with a linking CAM, two CMs who share defensive and forward duties, and wingers whose movement complements your fullbacks. Treat it as a squad-fit template, not a proven “best” tactic: FC IQ roles shape off-ball behavior, and role familiarity matters.
Why use the 4-3-3 (4)?
The formation puts a CAM behind the striker and two CMs underneath. That gives you a central connector between midfield and the front three, but it also creates a balancing job: if the CAM and both CMs push forward, the space in front of the back line can be exposed. That trade-off follows from the formation’s structure; it is not a measured performance claim.

EA SPORTS says, “Player Roles guide how every player thinks, behaves, and moves off the ball.” Roles and their familiarity should therefore guide your assignments, rather than choosing a popular setup code and assuming it suits every card. EA also explains that formations constrain the available positions and roles, while a custom tactic combines formation, tactical settings, and player roles. EA SPORTS FC 25 FC IQ Deep Dive
A practical starting setup
Use the following as a balanced starting point. It is an editorial template based on FC IQ’s role system, not a configuration established by controlled comparisons.

| Position | Starting role idea | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| CAM | Playmaking-oriented role | Choose this when you want the CAM to link midfield with the front three. If you want more runs beyond the striker, favor a more attack-oriented role instead. Match the role and focus to the card’s familiarity and attributes; EA does not identify a universally best CAM role. |
| One CM | Defensively stable role | Give one midfielder a more protective responsibility so the center is not left empty when teammates advance. Select an available role that suits the player’s familiarity. |
| Other CM | Transition-supporting or forward-arriving role | Use this player to help progress attacks or arrive in forward areas, while keeping the first CM’s cover in mind. |
| Wingers | Mix width-preserving and inside-oriented movement as needed | A player who holds width can keep a flank occupied; an inside-oriented player can make inward runs and leave room for an overlapping fullback. Coordinate the two sides with your fullbacks rather than making both wide players behave identically by default. |
| Build-up and defense | Choose settings your squad can support | Set your build-up approach around how safely your players progress the ball and how quickly they can attack. Set defensive risk around your pressing habits and defenders’ ability to recover into space; avoid treating an extreme defensive line as universally optimal. |
Roles available depend on the selected formation, and familiarity affects how well a player performs a role. EA’s FC IQ article includes a general 4-3-3 Flat preset example with balanced build-up and defensive settings; that is not evidence that those settings—or any role assignment—are best for 4-3-3 (4) in Ultimate Team. How to adjust when the setup is not working
- Attacks crowd the middle: Keep a width-preserving role on at least one side, or reconsider how the wingers and fullbacks share the flanks.
- Opponents counter through midfield: Reduce forward commitment or give one CM a more protective duty. Check whether the CAM and both CMs are advancing at the same time.
- The striker feels isolated: Try a CAM role that links play, or adjust the build-up approach so the team can connect with the front three more reliably.
- Space behind the defense is too easy to attack: Lower the defensive risk or press less aggressively if your defenders cannot recover into the space you leave.
These are tactical adjustments inferred from the formation’s structure, not guaranteed in-game outcomes. Change one dimension at a time—such as a CM’s duty or a winger’s movement—so you can judge what helped.

What to check before borrowing a tactic code
A shared code is a template, not a promise that the assignments fit your squad. Compare candidate setups using these checks:
- Role fit and familiarity: Are your key players comfortable in their assigned positions and roles?
- Central cover: Can the two CMs protect the area in front of the defense when the CAM advances?
- Width: Do your wide players hold the touchline, move inside, or divide those jobs—and how does that interact with your fullbacks?
- Progression and tempo: Does your team have safe passing options while building from the back, or is quicker forward progression more suitable?
- Defensive risk: Does your selected defensive approach leave more space behind the line than your defenders can cover?
- Adaptability: Can you change roles and settings to suit the cards you actually use? FourFourTwo likewise advises tailoring tactics codes to your team rather than assuming an imported code will fit every player. FourFourTwo’s FC 25 tactics-code guide
How much weight should you give community examples?
FUTWIZ lists a user-submitted 4-3-3 Attack example with two Box-to-Box CMs, a Playmaker CAM, Counter build-up, and an Aggressive defensive approach. It can offer ideas to test, but it is one community configuration—not a controlled comparison or proof of success. Check that the page still applies to your game version before relying on its assignments. FUTWIZ 4-3-3 Custom Tactics by Guest

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is there one best 4-3-3 (4) tactic?
The available sources do not establish a single best 4-3-3 (4) tactic or publish controlled performance evidence for the formation in Ultimate Team. The most defensible approach is to start with roles that fit your cards, preserve enough midfield cover, and adjust width, progression, and defensive risk to address what you see in matches. No verified win-rate or rank claim is available to support calling a specific configuration “meta.”
