Black Flame is a horror novel by Gretchen Felker-Martin about an archivist restoring a supposedly destroyed exploitation film—and the disturbing visions and occult terror that follow. It is distinct from Blackflame, the separate Cradle-series novel by Will Wight.

What is Black Flame about?

The publisher’s synopsis follows Ellen Kramer, a lonely archivist who begins restoring The Baroness, an infamous exploitation film believed to have been destroyed in a Nazi fire. As Ellen works on the movie, visions and voices suggest that it may be more than a historical artifact. The restoration draws out dark desires and leaves her fearing that she is unleashing occult horrors. The synopsis presents obsession, repressed desire and a haunted film as central elements of the story. Simon & Schuster’s publisher listing

Where and when is the story set?

Publishers Weekly places the story in mid-1980s New York City. In its account, Ellen works for the Path Foundation, a struggling film-restoration company. The review also highlights controversy over restoring a racist movie, public backlash against the organization and Ellen’s decision to share the film. These setting and plot details come from the trade review; the publisher synopsis focuses on Ellen and the film’s apparent supernatural effects. Publishers Weekly’s review and listing

What kind of book is it?

The publisher categorizes Black Flame as fiction and horror, while Apple Books places it under Fiction & Literature. The safest broad description is a horror novel. Publishers Weekly frames it as a book bringing film, queer history and terror together; those are the reviewer’s thematic descriptions rather than an official, more specific subgenre label.
