How a wizard build works in Avowed
Avowed lets you invest in the Wizard skill tree without locking you into a traditional class. You can mix in abilities from other trees as you shape the character, a flexibility also described in Xbox’s Avowed guidance. Think of “wizard build” as a focus for your character rather than a class with a fixed set of choices.
The build’s central idea is to use grimoires for spell access and a wand for complementary attacks. Game8’s guide, updated for the 2.0 update, makes Grimoire Mastery a central pick and includes grimoires, wand damage, attributes, and equipment in its plan. Start using spells early
You do not need to wait for a late-game item to begin building around spells: Xbox Wire says the Grimoire of Elements is available from the start. Use the early opportunity to get comfortable with grimoire-based casting, then prioritize Grimoire Mastery as you develop the Wizard tree. Keep a wand as a complement
The cited Game8 build includes wand damage alongside grimoire use. Treat the wand as a complementary part of the setup rather than a reason to abandon spell access. The sources do not establish that a wand-and-grimoire combination out-damages other weapon or spell approaches in every encounter.
How to spend points and choose a playstyle
For a first run, put your early build emphasis into Wizard skills that support your intended grimoire use, then consider cross-tree choices if you want a broader toolkit. Xbox’s guidance supports mixing trees, but the evidence available here does not establish specific defensive, control, or utility skills as mandatory picks.

Game8 discusses attributes and equipment, but its cited guide information does not provide enough detail to responsibly reproduce an exact point-by-point attribute allocation here. Use its build plan as a reference, and make attribute choices according to the character you want rather than following invented thresholds or treating an unverified allocation as optimal.
- Spell-focused: Prioritize Wizard-tree investment and grimoire use.
- Mixed toolkit: Add abilities from other trees when you want to round out the character; Avowed does not require a single-tree build.
- Wand-forward: Keep wand attacks in the rotation, while recognizing that the cited sources do not rank this approach against alternatives.
Fresh playthrough versus New Game+
Do not treat New Game+ advice as a first-run level-up plan. In its Anniversary Update announcement, Obsidian says New Game+ carries progression forward and lets attributes be pushed further than on a fresh character. Patch notes and older build advice
Build instructions can be affected by updates, particularly details involving menus and ability behavior. Obsidian’s Patch 2.1 notes include a fix for cooldown reduction affecting grimoire abilities cast from the hot bar after switching loadouts. If an older guide’s hot-bar or cooldown advice does not match your game, check whether it predates that patch. Read the Patch 2.1 notes, dated March 25, 2026.
Game8 labels its wizard guide as updated February 19, 2026. That date is useful context, but it does not establish that every recommendation remains optimal after later changes.
