This is an editorial ranking, not an official or consensus score. It covers the original trilogy and the separate reboot trilogy; remasters and campaign remasters are not separate entries.
The titles fall into two continuities. The 2007 game, Modern Warfare 2 (2009), and Modern Warfare 3 (2011) form the original trilogy. Modern Warfare (2019) is an Activision-described reimagining, not a continuation or beat-for-beat retelling of the 2007 story. Modern Warfare II (2022) follows the 2019 game, and Modern Warfare III (2023) is its direct sequel. Activision’s 2019 title page, its 2022 announcement, and its Modern Warfare III page establish those relationships.

How the ranking works
Each entry is judged on three related questions: does its campaign feel coherent and memorable, does its multiplayer have a distinct identity, and does the game work as a satisfying experience on its own? A strong performance in one area cannot fully make up for a weaker overall package. The ordering below is criticism and editorial judgment; official release pages establish dates and continuity, not comparative quality.
1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)
Why it ranks first
Call of Duty 4 earns the top spot because its campaign and multiplayer feel like parts of the same confident reinvention. The campaign moves between distinct perspectives and scales, building tension through focused missions rather than relying only on spectacle. Its best moments are memorable because the game gives them room to land.
#1 Best Overall
- XBOX CROSS-GEN BUNDLE – Includes Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 for Xbox Series X, and Xbox One devices with a disc drive.
- CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 7 – Treyarch and Raven Software are bringing players the most mind-bending Black Ops ever.
- CAMPAIGN MODE – Squad up or go solo in an innovative Co-Op Campaign that redefines the Black Ops experience. Take on high-stakes challenges across a wide spectrum of environments, from the neon-lit rooftops of Japan to the Mediterranean coast, and even into the deepest corners of the human psyche.
- MULTIPLAYER MODE – Multiplayer explodes out of the gate with 16 electrifying 6v6 maps and two 20v20 maps at launch. From futuristic Tokyo vistas to the frozen, unforgiving wilds of Alaska, every environment is brimming with danger and opportunity. Master a cutting-edge arsenal and outmaneuver your enemies with an evolved Omnimovement system.
- ROUND-BASED ZOMBIES MODE – The nightmare begins where reality ends. Trapped in the heart of the Dark Aether, the crew is thrust into a vast, ever-shifting hellscape. This isn’t just survival. It’s a descent into madness.
Multiplayer is equally important to its legacy: progression, unlocks, and recognizable loadout choices give matches a strong sense of personal direction. The result is a game with a clear identity in both halves, and one that remains a complete recommendation rather than merely a historical stepping stone.
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
Why it ranks second
Modern Warfare 2 expands the original’s scale and pace, with a campaign built around sharp reversals and set pieces. Its heightened tone is part of the appeal, although it makes the story less restrained and cohesive than Call of Duty 4.
Its multiplayer is among the series’ most instantly recognizable, with a brisk rhythm and a broad array of ways to build a class. That strength comes with a trade-off: the game’s willingness to let powerful tools run wild can make matches feel less even. It is an exhilarating sequel, but the first game’s tighter balance of campaign and multiplayer wins the ranking.
3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
Why it ranks third
Released on October 25, 2019, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, this is a reimagining of the series rather than the next chapter in the original trilogy. Activision’s title page calls it an “epic reimagining”; that is publisher framing, while its place in this ranking is a critical judgment.

- GLOBE‑SPANNING CAMPAIGN — Fight across the Korean Peninsula, New York, Paris, and Mumbai in a high‑stakes narrative where global conflict escalates and survival depends on tactical precision.

The campaign gives the reboot a distinct, more contemporary tone, and the game’s multiplayer supports a wide range of play styles. At launch, Activision described modes spanning Free-for-All through tactical objective play, with maps set in locations from the Modern Warfare universe. The launch announcement also describes seasonal post-launch content. Its breadth and strong standalone identity put it above the later reboot entries, though the campaign and multiplayer do not combine into as seamless an overall package as the two original leaders.
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011)
Why it ranks fourth
Modern Warfare 3 closes the original trilogy with a direct continuation of its conflict and a campaign driven by momentum. It is a satisfying payoff for players invested in the earlier games, but that dependence on prior context makes it a less self-contained starting point than the top three.
Its multiplayer continues the established formula rather than reshaping it as dramatically as Modern Warfare 2. That gives the game a dependable identity, but less of the surprise and personality that distinguish the entries above it. It is a solid finale, ranked below the reboot’s stronger standalone entry on overall impact.
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022)
Why it ranks fifth
Modern Warfare II follows the story of Modern Warfare (2019), as Activision stated when the game became available in 2022. Its listed platforms were PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The announcement is useful for understanding its place in the reboot continuity, but it does not establish how the game compares in quality.

- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription
As a follow-up, it has the advantage of a cast and world already in place. As a standalone package, however, it does less to establish a fresh identity than the 2019 reboot. Its campaign and multiplayer are capable, but the overall experience feels less distinctive than the stronger entries in this list.

Why it ranks sixth
Released November 10, 2023, Modern Warfare III is described by Activision as a direct sequel to Modern Warfare II. Its official page lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Activision’s page establishes the sequel relationship and release details.
The game’s multiplayer has a notable connection to the 2009 entry: Activision’s 2023 anniversary retrospective says it included all 16 launch maps from Modern Warfare 2 (2009), modernized with new modes and gameplay features. That reuse is a specific link between the games, not proof that their multiplayer plays identically.
That map collection gives returning players a clear point of recognition, but nostalgia cannot by itself create the same sense of a new identity. In this ranking, the 2023 entry lands last because it feels more dependent on what came before than the other games do. The same 2023 retrospective called its launch the first time the franchise would release direct sequels in back-to-back years; that was a historical statement about the releases at the time, not a general rule about the series.
Which Modern Warfare games are connected, and what order should you play them in?
Original trilogy
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011)
Reboot trilogy
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022)
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023)
Play either trilogy in release order to follow its story. The 2019 game starts a separate continuity; it does not bridge the 2007 trilogy into the 2022 and 2023 games.
