Microsoft later said the delay was not due to Xbox platform limitations “that have been raised to us.” The cited material does not confirm a Sony deal or establish one definitive cause. The Xbox Series X|S version has since released; Microsoft’s store lists August 20, 2025 as its release date.
Why was Black Myth: Wukong delayed on Xbox?
The Xbox version was delayed from its anticipated 2024 launch window. At the time, Game Science’s explanation, as reported in June 2024 coverage, was that it needed additional optimization for Xbox. Separately, later reporting attributed the delay to an undisclosed exclusivity arrangement involving Sony and Game Science.
Those accounts are not equivalent evidence. The optimization explanation was presented as the developer’s stated reason. The exclusivity explanation came from an unnamed source and was not publicly confirmed by Sony or Game Science in the cited coverage. Neither account, on its own, provides a complete, independently verifiable explanation of the private decisions behind the delay.
What did Microsoft say about Xbox technical limitations?
In September 2024, Microsoft said the delay was not due to Xbox platform limitations “that have been raised to us.” The wording is specific: it addresses limitations raised to Microsoft. It does not establish that the port required no technical work or optimization, and it does not confirm an exclusivity deal. Push Square reported Microsoft’s statement on September 4, 2024.

Microsoft had also said in June that it was working with Game Science and could not comment on deals its partners made with other platform holders. That response did not name Sony or confirm that any agreement caused the delay. Pure Xbox reported the June statement.
Was Black Myth: Wukong delayed on Xbox because of a Sony exclusivity deal?
That was a reported explanation, not an officially confirmed fact. Pure Xbox summarized reporting by IGN, Forbes and Windows Central, including IGN’s account that an unnamed source said no delay-causing technical issue had been reported to Xbox and attributed the delay to an exclusivity deal that Game Science and Sony had not publicized. The report is available here.

The cited coverage does not publish a contract or establish the arrangement’s terms, duration, or precise legal nature. It also does not include public confirmation from Sony or Game Science. The careful conclusion is that an unnamed source reportedly pointed to an exclusivity arrangement, while the parties’ cited public statements did not confirm it.
How the two explanations differ
| Account | Source and attribution | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Additional Xbox optimization | Reported in June 2024 as Game Science’s explanation. | The developer’s stated explanation as reported at the time; it does not independently prove the precise technical cause. |
| Sony–Game Science exclusivity arrangement | Attributed to an unnamed source in reporting summarized by Pure Xbox. | A reported explanation, not a public confirmation by Sony or Game Science; the cited material does not disclose contractual details. |
| No Xbox platform limitations raised to Microsoft | Microsoft’s September 2024 statement, quoted by Push Square. | Microsoft said the delay was not due to limitations raised to it; that statement does not rule out all optimization work or prove the alleged deal. |
Is Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox now?
Yes. Microsoft’s Xbox store lists the game for Xbox Series X|S with a release date of August 20, 2025, and identifies Game Science as both developer and publisher. The listing describes it as an action RPG. Check the Xbox store listing for current platform and availability details.
