Blizzard announced on April 25, 2024, that it would not hold BlizzCon that year. The company said it had considered the decision over the previous year and was approaching 2024 differently, but it did not identify a specific business, staffing, development, or programming reason.
What Blizzard announced about BlizzCon 2024
In its April 25, 2024 announcement, Blizzard said: “After careful consideration over the last year, we at Blizzard have made the decision not to hold BlizzCon in 2024.” The company added that the decision was not made lightly and that it was approaching the year differently.
That announcement canceled the 2024 convention; it did not announce that BlizzCon was ending permanently. Blizzard said it was excited to bring the event back in future years, without giving a return date at the time.
Why was BlizzCon 2024 canceled?
Blizzard did not give a more specific reason. Its statement refers to careful consideration over the preceding year and a different approach to 2024, but does not attribute the decision to finances, staffing, game development, or any particular programming change. Those explanations should be treated as speculation, not as Blizzard’s stated rationale.
What Blizzard said it would do instead
Blizzard said it had explored different event formats and planned to share information about attending other industry trade shows and conventions, including Gamescom. It also mentioned Diablo IV’s upcoming expansion, Vessel of Hatred, as part of its plans for 2024. These were separate pieces of the company’s 2024 event plans, not a stated explanation for canceling BlizzCon.
BlizzCon’s later return
Blizzard subsequently announced that BlizzCon would return in 2026. The Associated Press also reported the company’s plans for an event in Anaheim that September. That later return confirms the 2024 cancellation was a year-specific decision; it does not supply a reason Blizzard did not give in its 2024 announcement.
