Astro Bot makes a strong case as one of Sony’s finest platformers: it puts playful, varied platforming at the center, uses the PS5’s DualSense features as part of its presentation, and folds PlayStation history into the adventure. That is an argued judgment, not an objective all-time ranking. Sony released the Team ASOBI game exclusively for PS5 on September 6, 2024.
What kind of game is Astro Bot?
Astro Bot is a PS5-exclusive platform game developed by Team ASOBI, part of PlayStation Studios. Sony announced its September 6, 2024 launch as a celebration of PlayStation characters and console capabilities. The basic appeal is broader than nostalgia: the game is built around navigating platforming challenges, discovering collectibles, and using Astro’s powers, while familiar PlayStation heroes and references add a layer for longtime fans.

Sony’s launch announcement presents the game as a showcase for 4K visuals, 3D audio, and the PS5’s high-speed SSD. Those are the publisher’s descriptions of the experience, not independently measured performance results. Digital Foundry’s technical review examined resolution, performance, graphics, physics, fluid simulation, controller features, and sound, and characterized the work as outstanding, including in comparison with leading platform games. That is one outlet’s assessment rather than a universal consensus.
How does Astro Bot use the DualSense?
DualSense support is one of the game’s clearest platform-specific selling points. PlayStation’s official game page highlights haptic feedback and the controller’s built-in speaker; the PlayStation Store listing also specifies vibration function and trigger effect support. Sony says these features help make Astro’s universe feel alive. That is promotional language, but the supported features are concrete: the game is designed to use tactile and audio feedback from the controller, rather than treating the DualSense as a generic input device.

#1 Best Overall
- Face thrilling, unpredictable challenges as you explore distinctive hand-crafted lands through deeply immersive and expressive controls.
- PERILOUS PLATFORMING EXPERIENCE - Explore here, there and everywhere as you utilize Sackboy’s cool, diverse move-set to face a huge variety of thrilling challenges, fierce enemies and startling surprises.
- RE-STUFFED. RE-STITCHED. RE-ZIPPED - Sackboy returns to the big time stuffed with fresh moves and game-changing gadgets in an awe-inspiring and downright fun 3D adventure in this new, but familiar world.
The controller integration matters most to buyers who enjoy tactile feedback and small sensory details as part of play. It is not a separate game requirement: the DualSense is the PS5 controller, and any additional or limited-edition controller is an optional accessory. This review’s evidence establishes feature support, not a firsthand assessment of how each effect feels in play.
Does Astro Bot deserve to be called one of Sony’s best games?
There is a credible case for that description if “best” means a polished, distinctive platform game that combines strong technical presentation, controller-aware design, and a clear identity. The PlayStation references give the adventure extra significance for fans, while the core platforming premise gives it a reason to exist beyond cameos. Digital Foundry’s technical coverage supplies a detailed positive independent assessment, and TIME included Astro Bot among its 10 best video games of 2024, describing it as a full-length Astro game built around PS5 controller features.

Those sources support critical recognition; they do not establish an objective ranking across Sony’s entire history. Whether it belongs on an individual player’s personal best-of list depends on how much they value platforming, exploration, DualSense integration, and PlayStation nostalgia. Players looking primarily for a different genre should judge it on its platform-game identity, not its console-exclusive status alone.

The PlayStation Store displayed an average owner rating of 4.77 out of 5 from 74K ratings in a snapshot observed October 7, 2026. This is a store-owner rating, not a critic score, and both the average and number of ratings can change as more users rate the game. It is useful as a broad signal of buyer satisfaction, but it cannot tell you whether the particular mix of platforming and PlayStation references suits you.

Is Astro Bot worth buying for PS5?
It is an appealing choice for PS5 owners who want a platform game built around movement, collectibles, powers, and tactile controller support, especially if PlayStation history is part of the fun. The critical case is supported by independent coverage, while Sony’s own feature descriptions explain how the game is positioned as a showcase. Those are reasons to consider it—not a guarantee that every player will rank it among Sony’s greatest games.
