Astro Bot won The Game Awards’ 2024 Game of the Year. If you’ve finished it, the clearest next step is to explore Astro’s earlier adventures: Astro’s Playroom and Astro Bot Rescue Mission. If you’re considering the winner, know that it’s a standalone, single-player game for PS5—not PS4 or PS VR2.
What did Astro Bot win?
The Game Awards’ official winners list names Astro Bot as the 2024 winner for both Game of the Year and Best Game Direction, and credits Team Asobi and Sony Interactive Entertainment (The Game Awards winners and nominees). That is the result of this particular awards program, not a claim that every player or every outlet agreed on one best game.

PlayStation also reported a separate reader poll: more than 1.6 million votes were cast globally across 19 categories, and Astro Bot won the Game of the Year category by a majority of votes (PlayStation Blog’s 2024 poll results). This was a PlayStation reader vote, distinct from The Game Awards’ result.
What is Astro Bot, and where can you play it?
PlayStation describes Astro Bot as a standalone, full-sized, single-player 3D action platformer exclusive to PS5. The official product FAQ says it is not available for PS4 or PS VR2, and that it has no in-game purchases (PlayStation’s Astro Bot page and FAQ). The game launched on September 6, 2024, according to Sony’s announcement (Sony Interactive Entertainment’s launch announcement).

#1 Best Overall

Its scale depends on which source and unit you’re looking at. The current PlayStation product FAQ says the game has more than 50 planets and 300 bots to rescue. Sony’s launch announcement described six galaxies and over 80 levels. Those figures refer to different kinds of content and should not be collapsed into one count.
The premise, as the Associated Press summarized it in its 2024 games list, is Astro traveling across planets to rescue fellow droids through running, jumping, and punching challenges (Associated Press’ 2024 video game picks). Sony also highlighted the PS5 DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in its launch coverage; these are features of the experience, not a separate game purchase requirement.

What should you play after Astro Bot?
Astro’s Playroom
PlayStation lists Astro’s Playroom among the series’ earlier adventures on the Astro Bot product page. It’s a natural choice if you want another entry in Astro’s history before moving to a different franchise.
Astro Bot Rescue Mission
Astro Bot Rescue Mission is another earlier adventure named by PlayStation. Check the game’s current hardware requirements before choosing it: it is a separate release, and compatibility is not established by the Astro Bot product page. These two games are series follow-ups in the sense that they came earlier; that does not establish that they match Astro Bot in length, format, or platform.

What did Team Asobi announce before release?
In a May 30, 2024 PlayStation Blog announcement, Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet outlined a planned scope of six galaxies and over 80 levels, more than 15 new abilities, over 70 new enemy types, and challenge levels (Team Asobi’s pre-release announcement). These are figures the studio announced ahead of launch, rather than independent measurements.
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO of Studio Business Group Hermen Hulst described the game in the launch announcement: “Astro Bot truly has something for everyone and we are so proud of what Team ASOBI have accomplished,”. That is the publisher’s executive speaking about Sony’s own game.
