Yes, some VIVE headsets work without external base stations, but it depends on the exact model. VIVE Focus Vision uses inside-out tracking and does not need base stations for general use. VIVE Cosmos Elite and Cosmos configured with the External Tracking Faceplate do need them. Full-body tracking can also be base-station-free with VIVE Ultimate Trackers in supported setups, but those trackers require a VIVE Wireless Dongle and compatible content.
Which VIVE headsets work without base stations?
The key distinction is the tracking system: inside-out headsets track their position using sensors on the headset, while external tracking setups rely on base stations. HTC’s specifications and support pages distinguish the models as follows:
| VIVE setup | Base stations needed? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| VIVE Focus Vision | No, for general use | Uses inside-out tracking and can operate as a standalone or PC VR headset. HTC product information. |
| VIVE Cosmos Elite | Yes | Uses base stations for headset and controller tracking out of the box. HTC support. |
| VIVE Cosmos with External Tracking Faceplate | Yes | The faceplate uses external tracking; HTC says it does not support camera tracking or passthrough. HTC support. |
VIVE Focus Vision: no stations for general headset tracking
Focus Vision’s inside-out tracking means you do not need to mount or set up external base stations for ordinary headset use. HTC describes it as both a standalone and PC VR headset. For PC VR, HTC documents VIVE Streaming; check the product page for applicable system requirements. HTC VIVE Focus Vision product information.
VIVE Cosmos: check the configuration
“VIVE Cosmos” alone is not enough to determine the answer. The Cosmos Elite relies on base stations, and a Cosmos fitted with the External Tracking Faceplate does too. Do not assume that one Cosmos configuration’s tracking setup applies to another.

Can you use VIVE full-body trackers without base stations?
Yes, VIVE Ultimate Trackers use inside-out tracking and do not require base stations. They are a different product from the older VIVE Tracker (3.0), which HTC lists for selected SteamVR setups that use base stations. HTC tracker comparison.
What Ultimate Trackers require
- A VIVE Wireless Dongle is required. HTC says one dongle can connect one to five Ultimate Trackers.
- The dongle’s connection setup varies depending on whether you are using the trackers standalone, with wireless PC streaming, or with wired PC streaming. Follow HTC’s setup instructions for your specific configuration: VIVE Focus Vision and Ultimate Tracker information.
- When the dongle is plugged into a PC, HTC says pairing is done through SteamVR via VIVE Hub.
- Full-body tracking and object tracking depend on compatibility with the specific VR content. A compatible headset and tracker do not guarantee support in every game or app.
Before buying trackers for a particular game, check that the game supports the tracking feature you want. HTC’s tracker comparison identifies product capabilities, but app support must be confirmed for the content you intend to use.

What if you already own base stations or VIVE Tracker (3.0)?
If you have a Lighthouse setup, verify the station generation against your exact headset, controllers, and trackers before buying or reusing hardware. HTC’s compatibility table lists supported combinations and states that different base-station versions are not interchangeable. HTC base-station compatibility table.
HTC lists VIVE Tracker (3.0) as compatible with selected SteamVR base-station headsets, so it is relevant to owners of those systems—not the base-station-free alternative to Ultimate Tracker. Check the tracker’s compatibility details alongside your headset and station generation before purchasing. HTC tracker comparison.

How to choose the right setup
- Identify the exact headset and configuration. Check whether it is Focus Vision, Cosmos Elite, or Cosmos with the External Tracking Faceplate.
- Decide what you need tracked. General headset tracking and full-body tracking are separate questions; a headset that works without stations does not automatically make every tracker station-free.
- Check how you will connect. For Focus Vision, distinguish standalone use from wired or wireless PC streaming. For Ultimate Trackers, account for the required dongle and follow the instructions for the matching connection method.
- Verify app support. Confirm that your intended VR title supports full-body or object tracking if that is the reason you are adding trackers.
- For a base-station setup, confirm generation compatibility. Use HTC’s compatibility table for the precise headset, controller, tracker, and station versions.
