If Minecraft chat is not working, first identify what is failing: opening the chat box, sending text, seeing anyone’s messages, or seeing one player’s messages. Check in-game visibility controls and account permissions before treating the problem as a network fault. These six checks cover the documented causes for Java and Bedrock editions.
1. Identify what is not working
Press Return or T to open text chat, as described in Minecraft’s Social Features guide. Then use the symptom to narrow the check:
- The chat box will not open: check the key or control used to open chat.
- You can open chat but cannot send a message: check communication permissions, especially on a child account.
- You cannot see messages: check whether chat is hidden or text has been filtered.
- You cannot see one player’s messages: check whether that player was hidden in-game.
- The game says chat is disallowed by account settings: check the account’s Xbox privacy controls.
2. Check account communication permissions
For a child account, the parent should review its Xbox account settings. Minecraft’s Parental Controls in Minecraft guidance says that only a parent account can modify a child’s settings. Exact labels and screens can change.
- Sign in to the parent account and open the child’s Xbox account settings.
- Under Online Safety, check that multiplayer access is allowed if the child needs to join multiplayer games.
- Under Privacy, check Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites. The available choices include Everyone, Friends, or Block for communication with people outside the child’s friends list.
- Save any needed changes, then have the child restart Minecraft and test chat again.
These are separate permissions: being able to enter a world does not establish that multiplayer access or communication with other players is allowed.

3. Check chat visibility in the game
Chat may be hidden without any account restriction. Check the game’s chat visibility controls and restore chat if it has been turned off.
Java Edition: check hidden players
Java Edition’s Social Interactions screen lets you hide messages from particular players. Since version 1.16.4, the screen opens with a configurable key, P by default. Open it and check whether the player whose messages are missing is hidden. The feature and default key are documented in the Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.4 release notes.

4. Consider Bedrock’s profanity filter
In Bedrock Edition, unsuitable text may appear as hashtags or be hidden by the profanity filter. The filter is on by default and cannot be disabled for a signed-in child account, according to Minecraft’s Social Features in Minecraft guidance. If only some messages are missing or altered, filtering may explain it; that symptom alone does not prove a connection problem.

Minecraft recommends keeping the game current for security fixes, safety features, and gameplay optimizations. An update may address a game issue, but it is not guaranteed to resolve chat problems caused by permissions or visibility settings.

6. Use the official support path that matches the issue
If the checks above do not restore chat, use the relevant article in Minecraft Help’s Multiplayer Support index. It lists resources for Java chat access, network errors, and child-account multiplayer issues. Choose the one matching your edition and the exact error rather than applying generic network changes.
