One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhen Fortnite will not load, start by noting your platform and the exact point where it stops—launch crash, a stuck loading screen, “Checking for Updates,” or “Cloud Download Failure.” Check Epic Games Status and Fortnite’s known-issue notices before changing settings. Then use the troubleshooting path for your specific device and symptom; no single step is guaranteed to fix every case.
Start with the exact error and current service status
Write down whether Fortnite fails to open at all, crashes during startup, or stops on a particular screen. If an error message appears, search its exact wording in the Epic Games Help Center; small wording differences can point to different causes and remedies.

Fortnite will not open or crashes on PC
Work from low-disruption checks toward reinstalling or system-level changes. Epic’s PC guidance does not promise that any one step will fix the problem.

- Search the exact error. If Fortnite displays an error, look it up in the Epic Games Help Center before trying unrelated fixes.
- Check minimum requirements. If there is no error message, confirm that the PC meets Fortnite’s current minimum requirements using Epic’s PC troubleshooting guide.
- Verify Fortnite’s game files. In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, select the three-dot menu beside Fortnite, choose Manage, then select Verify. Wait for verification to finish before launching again.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache. Follow Epic’s cache-clearing instructions in the PC troubleshooting guide; this targets launcher cache, not saved account settings.
- Update the video driver. Get the current driver for your graphics hardware from its manufacturer, then restart the PC and test Fortnite.
- Try running Epic Games Launcher as administrator. If that does not help, continue to the reinstall and later checks in Epic’s guide rather than changing system settings at random.
- Reinstall the launcher, then Fortnite if needed. Reinstallation is a more disruptive step and requires downloading the software again.
- Use Epic’s remaining checks only if the earlier steps fail. The guide links to instructions for adding the Fortnite folder to an exclusion list and trying another installation drive. It also covers disabling background applications, checking the drive for errors, and removing the FortniteGame folder from local app data. These steps can affect security, running applications, storage, or local game data; follow Epic’s detailed instructions rather than improvising commands.
If the game still will not open after those checks, Epic directs users to seek help from the hardware manufacturer.
Fortnite will not load on a console
For PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, Epic’s general console sequence is to check for Fortnite updates and system updates, clear the console cache, power cycle the console, and reinstall Fortnite if necessary. Epic says to contact the platform manufacturer if the problem persists. Its console troubleshooting guide has platform-specific instructions. Epic describes cache clearing as a way to help the game run more efficiently; it is a troubleshooting step, not proof that cached data caused the issue.

Xbox stuck on a loading screen
Epic’s Xbox-specific suggestions include restarting the modem or router, clearing the Xbox cache, reinstalling Fortnite, and clearing the Xbox MAC address before restarting the console. Use the Xbox instructions in Epic’s Xbox loading-screen guide; do not assume these network and console steps apply to every platform or error.
PlayStation stuck on “Checking for Updates”
Epic says this screen can involve communication problems with Epic’s servers. Check status first, then follow the PlayStation-specific guide, which includes restarting the modem or router, restoring licenses, and reviewing communication settings. It also recommends a wired LAN connection and provides specific DNS and MTU instructions. Those network settings are guidance for this particular symptom, not universal values to apply to other loading problems. If you try a wired connection, an Ethernet cable is one way to connect the console to your router; whether you need one depends on your setup.

- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. Fix “Cloud Download Failure”
The message “Cloud Download Failure: Failed to Download Client Settings from the cloud” can prevent Fortnite from loading or stop settings from saving between sessions. Epic says it can occur on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. Follow the symptom-specific sequence in Epic’s Cloud Download Failure guide:
- Check Epic Games Status for a service issue.
- Clear the device cache using the instructions for your platform.
- Try a public DNS service, following Epic’s instructions for your device.
- Troubleshoot the internet connection.
- Restart the device.
For this error, Epic says a corrupted settings file saved to the Epic account may be involved if the listed steps do not resolve the problem. Contact Epic Games Support in that case. Reinstalling Fortnite is not the first remedy in Epic’s listed sequence for this error.

When to report a bug or contact support
If the issue continues, keep the exact error text, platform and model, the screen where loading stops, and the steps already tried. Those details help distinguish a platform issue from an account, network, or game problem.
