If Pokémon GO AR will not turn on, cannot detect your surroundings, or fails in GO Snapshot, first check the specific feature’s requirements, then Camera permission and the in-game AR setting. Retry in a bright, open area with a visible flat surface, update the app, and refresh its data. Requirements differ by feature: in particular, Niantic says GO Snapshot AR on Android has required a 64-bit device since March 2025.
First, identify which Pokémon GO AR feature is failing
Pokémon GO has multiple AR experiences, and a phone that supports one may not support another. Work out whether the problem is the AR toggle during a wild encounter, AR+ anchoring a Pokémon in the surroundings, or AR in GO Snapshot. Also note what happens: the toggle is missing, the view stays static, surroundings are not detected, the app crashes, or a photo will not save. These symptoms do not point to one universal cause.

- Encounter AR: AR can show a wild Pokémon in the camera view. AR+ adds placement in the environment on supported devices.
- GO Snapshot AR: The camera is used to place a Pokémon in a scene for a photo. If the device is unsupported for AR, Niantic says you can still take a picture against a static background.
Check whether your phone supports the affected feature
General Pokémon GO compatibility is not proof that every AR feature works on a device. Niantic’s current Supported Devices page, accessed in 2026, lists iPhone 6s or later with iOS 15 or later, and Android 9 or later, with at least 2 GB of RAM, GPS/location services, and an internet connection. Niantic says it cannot guarantee every device that meets those criteria.
| Feature or check | Requirements stated by the source | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| General Pokémon GO support | iPhone 6s or later with iOS 15 or later; Android 9 or later; 2 GB or more RAM, GPS/location services, and internet. Niantic’s current Supported Devices page, accessed 2026. | Check the phone’s model and operating system. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee every device works. |
| AR during catching | Niantic’s AR catching page lists iPhone 6s and newer with iOS 11 or later, and Android 7 or later with ARCore support. | These are catch-mode page requirements, not a universal threshold for all AR features. |
| GO Snapshot AR | Niantic’s GO Snapshot page lists iOS 15 or later; since March 2025, Android requires a 64-bit device with ARCore support. | Do not treat older Android AR guidance as proof that GO Snapshot AR is supported. |
On Android, check the exact phone model in Google’s ARCore supported devices list. Support is model-specific: Google evaluates factors including camera quality, motion sensors, device architecture, and CPU performance. If the device is listed but ARCore is absent, check Google Play for Google Play Services for AR and install or update it if available for your device.

Turn on Camera permission and Pokémon GO’s AR setting
- Open your phone’s system settings, find Pokémon GO in the app list, and allow Camera access. The exact labels vary by operating system and device.
- Allow Location access as well for full gameplay; Niantic recommends Camera and Location permissions.
- Open Pokémon GO and check its Settings for the AR option. If you dismissed the AR prompt earlier, Niantic says you can revisit the setting there.
- Return to the affected feature and try again. If the toggle is missing, recheck feature compatibility rather than assuming permission alone is the cause.
Niantic’s AR mode and AR+ guidance describes the relevant catch-mode setup. Camera access must be permitted by the operating system before the game can use the camera.
Fix AR that will not detect your surroundings
If the camera opens but Pokémon GO cannot map or anchor the scene, try the following in a place with room to move. These steps address environmental detection; they will not necessarily fix a crash, hardware fault, or unsupported device.

- Move to a well-lit location. Niantic notes that low light can prevent the camera from seeing enough detail.
- Point the camera at an open area with a visible, flat surface, such as a clear patch of ground or a tabletop.
- Move the phone slowly across the scene so the game has time to detect the surface. Keep the camera steady and avoid quick, shaky panning.
- Remove obstructions from the camera’s view and avoid testing on a dark or uneven surface.
After adjusting the scene, retry the feature. If detection still fails, continue with the app and connection checks below.
Update Pokémon GO and refresh its data
- Install the latest Pokémon GO update from the official app store for your device.
- Check that your internet connection is working, then retry the affected AR feature.
- In Pokémon GO, open Settings > Advanced Settings > Refresh Game Data. Menu labels can change between versions; use the Advanced Settings area if the wording differs.
- Set your phone’s date and time to update automatically, then reopen the game.
- On Android, clear Pokémon GO’s cache through the phone’s app settings, then launch the game and test again.
- On iOS, Niantic includes clearing Safari data among its troubleshooting suggestions for some connectivity issues. This is a connectivity step, not a feature-specific AR fix.
- If earlier steps fail, reinstall Pokémon GO from the official store. Niantic says game progress is stored online and will not be lost through reinstalling.
For platform-specific instructions, follow Niantic’s Android troubleshooting guide or iOS troubleshooting guide.

When Pokémon GO AR still does not work
If the feature remains unavailable after these checks, contact Niantic through its support options. Include the phone model, operating system version, Pokémon GO version, the exact AR feature, and what happens when you try it. For Android, include whether your model appears on Google’s ARCore supported-device list. That information helps distinguish a feature-compatibility issue from permissions, tracking conditions, or an app problem.
