Ratchet & Clank: Clone Home, a canceled Java phone game planned as a follow-up to Going Mobile, has been recovered from an encrypted Sony Ericsson W880i and archived. It is a game-preservation discovery—not a new official release. Engadget reported that the preserved build is complete and playable, though somewhat unpolished.
What is Ratchet & Clank: Clone Home?
Clone Home was a Java-based mobile game intended to follow Ratchet & Clank: Going Mobile. It was originally scheduled to debut on Java phones in 2006, but was canceled shortly before its planned release, according to Engadget’s October 10, 2025 report. Its recovery brings a previously unavailable piece of the series’ mobile history into preservation; it does not mean Sony has released or endorsed the game now.

How was the game recovered?
The recovery centered on a Sony Ericsson W880i that reportedly held an encrypted copy of the game. College students identified as Emily and Super Gamer Omega Clank worked to crack the phone’s encryption, extract the files, and archive the build. Engadget described the result as complete and fully playable, while noting that it remains somewhat rough around the edges. That is the report’s description, not a claim of independent testing.
Time Extension’s October 10, 2025 mobile-news listing also placed the discovery in a game-preservation context and reported that the game was available online at the time. That does not establish that an archive remains accessible today.

Can you play Clone Home now?
A preserved copy was archived and reported as playable, but current download availability and legal authorization have not been independently established. The archive is not evidence of a licensed commercial release. The W880i is the handset from which the encrypted copy was recovered; the reporting does not establish that buying one is necessary or sufficient to run the archived build. It also does not identify a specific current emulator or setup as a reliable way to play it.
Who developed it?
The developer credit is unsettled. Clone Home was commonly attributed to Handheld Games, which had worked on earlier mobile titles including Going Mobile. Engadget reported that The Golden Bolt later came to believe JavaGround, a company involved with some of Sony’s later Java games, actually made it. No definitive production documentation or confirmed developer credit is established in the available reporting, so JavaGround should be treated as a possible attribution, not a settled fact.

Why was Clone Home canceled?
The reason has not been established. Engadget reported speculation from The Golden Bolt that potential litigation between Sony and Handheld Games may have contributed, but that is not a confirmed explanation. The same report said the game may briefly have been uploaded accidentally to Cingular or Sprint networks and downloaded by a few people before removal; this possible distribution history is also unverified.
