Critics were mixed overall: Metacritic records a 66/100 from nine critic reviews, with praise for its puzzles and playful take on Ooo offset by complaints about slow pacing and dull combat.
What kind of game is Finn and Jake Investigations?
It is a single-player adventure built around five cases, each presented as its own chapter. Players explore locations in the Land of Ooo, question witnesses, look for clues, assemble evidence, and use items from an inventory to solve puzzles. Finn handles fights, while Jake’s shape-shifting is part of the puzzle-solving. The PlayStation Store listing describes that structure and its one-player format.
Senior designer and writer Dave Ellis of Vicious Cycle Software called it a modern take on a classic adventure game focused on “exploring, investigating, and puzzle-solving.” He described the cases as separate but related adventures rather than one continuous story arc, set around the middle of the show’s sixth season. In the same PlayStation Blog article from April 21, 2015, he said fighting was not the focus.
What do the reviews say?
Metacritic’s release-era critic record gives the game a 66/100, categorized as “Mixed or Average,” based on nine reviews. Its displayed breakdown is one positive review (11%), eight mixed (89%), and none negative. These figures describe the reviews counted by Metacritic, not every critic or every platform edition.

The praise centers on the character writing, puzzle design, and the appeal of seeing the show’s world rendered in 3D. The recurring reservations are pacing and combat. Official Xbox Magazine UK’s 70-point review, published in January 2016, praised the puzzles, characters, and setting but called combat dull and the pacing slow. Pure Xbox gave it 60 in October 2015, noting that exploration, 3D locations, and the cast could appeal to invested fans while advising caution. ZTGD’s 75-point review described the point-and-click approach as a bold choice for a franchise with both child and adult fans. These are individual reviewers’ judgments, not findings from a common gameplay test. Metacritic’s critic-review record lists the aggregate and review breakdown.
Metacritic also reports a user score of 5.8/10, based on 19 user ratings as shown in 2026. Its user-rating breakdown is five positive (26%), nine mixed (47%), and five negative (26%). Is it worth playing?
It is a reasonable fit if you are an Adventure Time fan who enjoys dialogue, exploration, and inventory puzzles and is comfortable with a leisurely pace. Its five-case structure offers a way to spend time in Ooo, while the critical record suggests that the action is a weaker part of the package. If you mainly want fast combat or a tightly paced action game, the reviews give you reason to be cautious. That recommendation follows from the game’s stated design and the recurring review themes; it is not based on hands-on testing.
