Start by identifying which PC version you have and where the failure occurs: the original Alan Wake, Alan Wake Remastered, or the Epic Games Launcher. The documented fixes are specific: Epic’s windowed-mode workaround is for Remastered startup failures, while Intel’s driver fix addresses random crashes in the original game on Intel Arc graphics.
First, identify the game and failure point
Before changing settings, note the edition, graphics-card model and driver version, and whether the game or the launcher is failing. A game that never opens, a crash during play, and a launcher that closes are different problems; the available official fixes do not apply to all three.
- Alan Wake Remastered will not launch: try Epic’s documented windowed-mode workaround below.
- Original Alan Wake freezes or crashes to desktop on Intel Arc: check Intel’s driver guidance below.
- Epic Games Launcher itself crashes or will not open: use Epic’s launcher troubleshooting, not the game-specific fixes.
Fix: Alan Wake Remastered does not launch
Epic’s support article recommends changing the game’s resolution configuration so it starts in Windowed mode rather than Fullscreen. This is a targeted workaround for Remastered startup trouble, not a general fix for every crash.
- In Windows taskbar search, enter
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsRemedyAlanWakeRemasteredand open the folder. - Open
resolution.xmlin Notepad. - Find the Window Value option and change it from
0to1. - Save the file, then relaunch the game.
These steps are from Epic Games Player Support’s Remastered launch guidance. If the file or option is absent, or the change does not help, avoid making other configuration edits based on guesswork; contact Epic Games Player Support for Remastered.

Fix: Original Alan Wake crashes on Intel Arc
Intel’s article concerns the original Alan Wake on Windows 10 or Windows 11 when played on Intel Arc graphics. It describes random freezes or crashes to desktop, sometimes accompanied by “Application blocked from accessing the graphics hardware.” Intel says, “This issue is resolved in the driver version 31.0.101.5074.” The article was last reviewed on December 19, 2024, so check Intel’s current supported driver for your GPU rather than assuming that version is the newest available.

- Uninstall the current graphics driver using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).
- Get the appropriate available driver from the Intel Support article and Intel Download Center.
- Install the driver in Safe Mode, following Intel’s instructions, then restart the PC.
This guidance is specific to the original game, Intel Arc graphics, and the described crash symptoms. It does not establish a fix for Remastered, NVIDIA or AMD graphics, or unrelated launch failures.
If Epic Games Launcher is the part that fails
When the launcher itself is unstable, Epic’s general troubleshooting is the relevant route. Its guidance covers checking Epic server status and launcher updates, confirming launcher system requirements, and trying the following launcher-level measures:

- Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Clear the launcher cache.
- Run the launcher as administrator.
- Update the graphics driver.
- Disable background applications.
- Reinstall the launcher.
Use the instructions and current UI details in Epic’s Epic Games Launcher troubleshooting guide. These steps address launcher problems generally; they are not evidence that the game itself is crashing for the same reason.
Check the original game’s published PC requirements
Epic Games Store lists the following requirements for the original Alan Wake. They can help identify an obvious hardware mismatch, but meeting the minimum does not guarantee compatibility or rule out driver and system issues.
