Afterimage is a single-player 2D action-adventure commonly described as a Metroidvania. The official website carries Modus Games branding, so publisher labels are best understood in the context of the specific platform or source rather than treated as interchangeable credits. The story follows Renee, an amnesiac girl who leaves her ruined village after attacks on humanity’s remaining settlements. She explores Engardin, a fantasy world, in search of the truth. The official synopsis establishes that premise; it does not guarantee that the story’s presentation will be clear to every player.

The clearest fit is for players who want to explore a broad interconnected map and enjoy trying different weapons and progression choices. Players who need a plainly delivered narrative or consistently smooth navigation may find the weaker points more important.
How do exploration and progression work?
The official description emphasizes interconnected, non-linear levels, unlockable abilities, shortcuts, and upgrades. That design links exploration to progression: new abilities can open routes, while returning through familiar areas is part of navigating a world that does not simply unfold as a single corridor. Review coverage’s mixed comments about pacing and level flow are relevant here; a large map can be appealing while also making orientation or momentum less consistent.

Steam’s store description advertises six main-weapon classes, more than 200 equipment options, more than 170 enemy varieties, and multiple endings. These are feature counts claimed by the storefront, not independently audited measurements. They indicate the advertised breadth of choices, but do not by themselves establish how balanced or distinct every option feels.
What is combat like?
Steam describes the combat as fast-paced and highlights varied character builds. The official feature list also connects combat to unlockable abilities and weapon upgrades. Reviewers surfaced in the available coverage praise the combat and weapon selection, making build experimentation one of the stronger reasons to consider the game. That breadth may suit players who enjoy adjusting equipment and approach as they progress; the counts on the store page should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every choice is equally useful.

Is the story easy to follow?
The premise is straightforward at the outset: Renee survives a catastrophe, leaves her ruined village, and seeks answers in Engardin. The concern raised in review coverage is not the absence of a setup, but the clarity and delivery of the story as it proceeds. Players primarily motivated by atmosphere, exploration, and combat may be more forgiving of that weakness than players looking for a tightly explained narrative.
